North Yorkshire Off-Road

Many thanks from me and spanner ,great scenery and roads both on and off ,sadly last ride out on 650 dakar:( picked gs1200 up on monday:beerjug: p/s see yorks off road i,ll repay all your efforts with good beer and rides you wont forget in ahuury:D

And for next time ?

Just last night we decided to have a short run out to another local lane that we had failed on a few years ago on the R80/7. Decided to try it on the GS. Bloody slippy exposed limestone and slimey mud, but the ol' girl made it (one-up mostly mind) without too much problem. Bloody good these GS's - not sure I fancy this on a 1150 though.....but who knows ? Next time ?
(note full on MX trousers and boots - almost looks like we hadn't planned this ride eh  )

And when we were halfway up, we were neither up nor down..........but the view was grand.
What a great place to live, half hour ride on the road cycle over the hills followed by a hour or so through them with mechanical aid..............truly fantastic :D

thanks

Fritz and Bev,

Thanks for organising a great day out. The biking was great fun, the scenery spectacular and the company top-notch. A hugely enjoyable day out.

Cheers, Andy

All

Just got the bike back together last night. Having commuted on Georgie's Serow for the past couple of days I now remember why people think that riding a GS off-road is daft - bloody hell it's a big bike (well compared to Georgie's VERY small bike)!

Which bit should I trash next?

BTW Fritz, the slippy stuff is lot easier if you let your tyres down a bit ;-)

Simon

More of the 'cheap' bits ;) (bet the cost of the oil was about equavalent to the s/h sump)
Must try the old air reduction business, no pressure guage - or more importantly tyre pump with me Tuesday. Wasn't planned.
Do you carry a pump to re-fill tyres - or use an airline and guess the difference ? (with tyre being warm by time you've got to garage)
On me cycle ride out afore the m/c off-road on Tues I suddenly noticed a space where me mini pump was  was still in tank bag - luckily no punctures. I take it for emergency off-road use, but guess it would take 'a few minutes' to put air in the m/c tire (we'll ignore the bead issue, that would be impossible I think)

Fritz

£19 for a s/h sump from Motorworks, next day delivery - would have been £60ish for a new one and a long wait.

I'm lazy and ride at low speed these days. I generally keep the tyres at dirt pressures (20fr, 23rr) and only blow them up if I'm going to be doing some distance at speed. They're fine up to 60mph, probably more, even two up. And you never know when you're going to need to dirtride ;-)

Your bike has a tube under the tank that is big enough to carry a slim pump (BMW made one), but I carry a 16inch tyre lever up there. When out and about I carry a mini double acting MTB pump. The one I have fits into the Scott tool bum-bag I have, which I wear when dirt riding without the tank panniers on.

You may have wondered what was in the tank panniers at the weekend - more spares on one side (but not a spare sump) and the bum-bag on the other side.

You're right about the handpump not being up to seating the bead, a real pain on tubeless tyres - have to take a tube out with you. I had 2 with me at the weekend. The main thing about a repair is to be able to get some air into the tyre so you can ride on - you CAN ride on a badly seated tyre, until you get to a compressor. BTW take a 21 inch tube with you - you can use that in the 17inch rear, but not the other way round!

On the big trip I took:

- a kit to repair tubeless tyres from the outside (never used)
- a kit to repair tubeless tyres from the inside - mushrooms (used twice)
- spare 17 and 21 tubes, incase the tubless carcass got too badly holed to repair (never used)
- a kit to repair tubes (never used)

But we were travelling in REMOTE areas

Simon

Aye was a MTB pump I carry, good bits of kit. Must try it on the m/c tyre for interest. Good shout on tube, and helpful comment re : bad seated bead. It's good to know in case of disaster. I guess, when it all turns to **** you just gotta keep rolling one way or other

You calling the Steps of Yorkshire inhabited mate  ;)

Pics - finally

Not that many photos - think i was too busy holding on!!

Welcoming Committee

Thanks for a great weekend all. Was good to get home, I'm not sure that sore is a suitable word for the way i was feeling Sunday morning. Welcoming committee was worth the uncomfortable trek home for though (aplogies for the gratuitous nature of the following pic but she's so lovely!!)

Can't believe I missed it, it looked great fun and i'm only down the road in Wharfedale. I've just got my 1150 adv and i'm looking for places to practice and people to practice with...doh!

Great pics Liz.
For those not in the know the pic of - I think - Dazzer is on the section we weren't actually supposed to decend (and therefore ascend), just for info for the next time - don't let that put you off (on on !). The ride was a little more adventurous at that point, and on the descent to Church Houses which was forced by the need to modify in search of oil supplies ;)
g and I - the following might be of interest to you ? Even closer !

I'll be posting the pics out to you all this w/e........unless the sun shines even more in which case it'll wait

Hi Fritz and fellow North Yorkshire off-roaders,

Checked the thread to see what I have missed.
Looking at the pics and stories, you guys had a lot of fun.
Very nice !
Have to see if I can join you next time !
:beerjug:

I have been to the north of scandinavia, where I participated the All-road tour in Finland and visited the Northcape.
Been home 2 days now and still haven't control over all my experiences and impressions.
As soon as I do, I will post a report on this forum.

Hi Sander, was going to email you - you've saved me the effort. Would be great to see a report of the all road (that's a misleading title if ever I heard one  ) maybe encourage a few from GB to come over ? If you ever hear anything on snowmobiling over there let us know. Keen to get on a sled in Scandinavia this winter if we can, would be great if it was with some of you guys. Look forward to your report on your trip, take it easy - but not too easy ;)

Rushy - that's Liz's beloved, just above Johnie on the list ;) Nought to do with Pet Shop Boys obviously.......... ( sorry Liz ;) )
