Im planning a route to Milan going via Switzerland for next month. When i plan it in the MRA app it takes me via roads which i believe need a vignette. does anyone know if its just the motorways that need it, or is it any dual carriageway ?
Can I set up MRA to avoid these roads ?

It is only the motorways of Switzerland that require a vignette.

Yes, MyRoute can be set to avoid motorways. Though possibly the easiest way is to ask Google maps to give you a route that avoids motorways and toll roads. See what you make of what it offered up and copy it into MyRoute, when you come to create your route.

That though assumes you are creating a route yourself, as opposed to asking MyRoute, to “Take me from A to B”.

Also maybe note, in Switzerland it’s sometimes difficult to tell if you have joined a motorway. A vignette does give some flexibility.

Also, crossing most of Switzerland sans motorway can take donkey years. I honestly do not advise it.
Just get a vignette, the digital version is easy to buy, not need to stick it anywhere, and be done with it.

i agree - if you are there in the summer and enjoying the passes its possible - but if you are using switzerland for transit then buy the Vignette - yes its costly - but it would donkeys to transit while avoiding all roads that need a vignette

About GBP 35 for a motorcycle. Five pints and a bit of London Pride. It’s not going to ruin a holiday.

@Wapping, thank you Richard. I’ve tried the the google maps and that’s what made me unsure. They both took me down route 2 which I thought was a motorway.
@er-minio , I agree about the vignette, but 2 of us haven’t ’done’ Switzerland and therefore need to put a tick in the box.
Along side doing the Gotthard pass.
I’m beginning to wish I had said I’m not going, but ‘my mate’ told me it was free to get into the Eicma show. So it appears I’m going.

No, I get it.
But, trust me, some bits you want to jump on the motorway for 30 mins and get through, instead of spending 2 hours at 30mph within villages in the plains and hidden cops and cameras.
No all the roads in Switzerland are interesting to ride :)
Especially when you start going north back to the UK.

I used to ride from Rome to London doing the Swiss rollercoaster (one day riding through) for years.

First day Rome-Mila, then I would live Milan in the early morning > rollercoaster > sleep in France. Day after: London.

I can find the routes on BC. Might help with planning/ideation.

This link may give you some good ideas for a run through Switzerland.

when checking your route in Google maps, they handily identify the national toll roads with a white number on a red background

this shows the green "need vignette" sign you will see joining the red #2 motorway

if you are seeing a blue #2 on the road you mention above, it could be a motorway but not a toll road, owned by the Canton not national government.

I traveled through Switzerland twice last month without touching motorways. The eastern side, Lake Constance area, was tedious with town after town, so slow, took hours to clear it, wish I'd taken the motorway there, things picked up as we closed in on Davoz.
Return route was better planned from the south to include some of the great mountain roads/passes, when they fizzle out as you progress north, I'd jump on the motorway.

Think of this as well that the back roads and mountain passes that you and your mate might be planing to ride, might as well be shut, due to early snowfall. Now that would be a PITA.

Also easy to find yourself on a Motorway, and they conveniently have signs for Motorways in green and non motorways in Blue, so once upon a journey I saw the sign for the next town at a junction giving me two options, and yes, hopped on the Motorway by mistake, I remember thinking "I'l take the back road", then having to jump off at the next junction PDQ as I was "sans-vignette"....

...Depending on your routes you do not always need one with a bit of planning and I think I have bought one for about 50% of my trips to the Swiss Alps, but it depends on your route in / out, and if in doubt just buy one and save yourself any stress.

Think of your Swiss vignette like a little bit of Toblerone that you take a nibble of when you want.

Wow, this seems to make it even more complex.

oops, I missed a streetview link from my post

anyway, you can completely remove any anxiety very easily. It costs £35 for guaranteed inoculation success.
aye, agreed. but my pal who got the free tickets hasnt been down there. We're taking 3 days to get to Milan and in a fit of stupidity i said I'd plan a route encompassing Speyer autotechnic museum, the black forest and weather permiting the Gotthard pass.
This in turn led to a transit through Switzerland.
Its a good job the trade day tickets are free as the rest of the trip feels like its going to be expensive.

Yaaaaay, Wapping and Wessie, thanks to your input ive got a google route, More importantly, i now understand how I went wrong.
In whats left of my brain (not much) i associated the blue signs as being motorways. Ive just re done the Google thing and its all on Blue numbered roads.
THANK YOU CHAPS
