route through switzweland.

This was my route at the time. It was a massive slog, especially on the Boxercup I had at the time (but very fun up the Susten).
I wouldn't do this today (you basically never stop) but you can cross through Switzerland (motorway) and then jump on a few of the classic passes of the rollercoaster, not all if you wanna do in one day.

If anything can be avoided, I'd say the Gotthardpass is the least interesting of the bunch, by far, in all honesty.

Remember: Switzerland and Italy motorways = green. A/National roads = blue.

Think of this as well that the back roads and mountain passes that you and your mate might be planing to ride, might as well be shut, due to early snowfall. Now that would be a PITA.
Yes, I’ve already mentioned this to the group.
Incidentally I’ve already told them the plan B is going to be buy a vignette and then motorway to Italy. 2 of them aren’t impressed as they haven’t been through Switzerland. The other 2 aren’t fussed either way. Me, I’ll decide on the day what to do depending on the weather. I’m far to old to spend the day fighting the cold and wet.

Gotthars pass is a bit shit, to be fair.
Yes, a ton of passes within a few miles that are really good however;

Furka
Grimsel
Susten
Oberalp
Nufenen

It is a crime to just blast past Andermatt and not spend a day riding all of these, the whole lot can be tackled in a day.

If you must use the Gothard take the old Tremola on the south side, really good if any of your bikermates are on a sportsbike, they will love the cobbled section, which is even be even better if it is raining and they are on slick supersport tyres.

I rate the Fluela Benjamin pass as great ride, if you like it a bit quick and flowing 👍
Sorry about renaming a pass, childish I know.

If you are planning to take in some higher passes make sure you have alternative routes available, the Grossglockner, Stelvio and Timmelsjoch have already been closed this year due to early and heavy snowfall

Not planning anything like that. It’s just a route through Switzerland and on to Milan in a day.

They’d arguably be better off, making a longer holiday of Switzerland.

PS That’s ‘better off’ spiritually, not financially.
Agreed , but the main focus in the free entry into the EICMA show, anything else I can add for the lad’s delectation is a bonus.

Incidentally, I can’t see us making it over the Gotthard pass as some passes are closed due to snow already.

Get ready to 0 degrees at tunnel entrance > 40 degrees in the middle > 12 on the other side :D

In November I would start considering the idea of a longer route and going all the way towards Monaco and then re-enter via the coast (if you have the time). Especially on motorbikes. Depending on how much weather you want to face on a motorbike.

I cross regularly in December and January (this year it will be late November) by car.

Yes. On the direct drive, four wheels, going through either Monte Bianco or Moncenisio (closer to Turin) will buy several hours of travel.
I used to drive through Switzerland for years, then started keeping on the French side, and realised I could get way further in the same day.

Since the thread is about Vignette/motorway costs:

Crossing the tunnels is more expensive (at least on car) than doing the Vignette in Switzerland.
One way crossing (return is offered only within a few days) is about 55 euros.
Then you get the Italian motorways tolls (same cost bike/car).

When I get to Rome, the motorway section from the border with France (Moncenisio) and Rosignano Marittimo in Tuscany, that is where the A12 motorway ends on the E80 route, costs me more than the entire motorway section from Calais to the Italian border. :D

That's why I never complain about the Vignette, that is fairly cheap in comparison. Especially if you get there a few times a year.
