Routing an Optimate cable on '08 GSA

If you leave the battery disconnected for a prolonged period...the date will need resetting...can't be done by yourself... you need the BMW computer thingy to do it

Oh FFS, are BMW really that stupid?? Lazy arse BMW software engineers (if its true).

It's a doddle to do, like everyone else says just undo the battery terminals then reconnect with the optimate cable in place. I routed mine to the off side(right hand side when looking forward) as it makes the connecting to the charger easier if the bikes on its side stand.

I wish that I had read this thread before I started to wire the Optimate to the terminals - particularly regarding the length of time that the terminals could be totally disconnected before resetting issues arise. As it was, I felt a bit like Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark - the scene where Indy has to seamlessly replace a precious artefact on a pedestal with a carefully weighed bag of sand without triggering the alarm.

I positioned everything so that I could carefully whip-off the battery screws, then slip on the Optimate connectors and replace the screws, all without losing connectivity. I did it, but this old git's heart rate was up there somewhere.

What a (true) tosser I turned out to be. :blast I could have taken it easy and had a nice cup of tea at the same time had I realised just how simple the operation would turn out to be.

Anyhow, its a doddle to do and a great success with easy access to the Optimate plug which I cable tied to the frame near the standard BMW accessory plug. And np issues about clock or date reset.

Recommended. :Motomartin

Great that you have, at last, managed to join a fused lead to a battery and tie it to the frame.

You can leave the Optimate connected 24/7/365 with no ill effect.

Just make sure you keep the socket clean (they corrode) or you will be here asking why your Optimate is not working properly.

Job done. Close thread.

Having now had a look at the GSA manual,

There's a manual? Does it tell you what oil to use?
