It appears (if the wisdom of the interweb is to be believed!) that the 2010 onwards RTs suffer from a lot of electrical switchgear problems. Is this so? If so, is there anything that can be done to prevent these problems, apart from buying a different bike?!

Probably best not to believe the 'wisdom of t'interweb!'

I've done 15,000 miles on mine (reg May 2013)......no problems to report......

I'd contradict Dr Nosh, I've had 2 2010-'s, both had switch issues, 1st had both left and right bar switch unit's replaced under 10k. 2nd bike had the kill switch stay in the off position, so was replaced at the side of the road by Assist. I've never had the 'Hot Ignition switch' issue, but that's probably because of the inclement weather in the UK!
Advice: other than not buying one... check the switches have been renewed, try not to let water onto the switches (keep it covered if stored outside), buy a bike that has some warranty and then complain the switches are failing intermittently.
Console yourself that BMW won't recognise there is an issue, and have continued to fit the same switches to the 2014 model!

Check with your dealer to see if they will replace them. Both handlebar switches were replaced by my local dealer (Riders, Cardiff) FOC on my 2010 model which I purchased privately from a forum member earlier this year. They also checked to see if the fuel pump "corrosion" modification had been done.

I have a 2013 bike, no problems so far, my mate has a 2012 model and had both replaced.

I have had a new battery, has anyone had problems with theirs ?

Yes had the duff battery issue, new battery supplied with no prompting required. No electrical issues in my 2013 RT other than the canbus not recognising my TomTom bracket and therefor flattening the battery even when no GPS connected...
