Hi all. Iv been gone for 3 years, I'm back under another name as the computer can't remember me.
Over the years I have had a few GSs 02 1150, 04 1200, 07gsa and 08 gsa

I did make the mistake of going to a honda st1300 but I have finally succumbed to my itch to get another GSA. ( the deals available helped ) plus this was the last chance to get a new Proper GS. With a dry clutch and a proper indicator switch.

After 4 weeks and 2500 miles I thought I should give it a clean.
And I noticed a new bit.

What is this Rubber Bung on the Final Drive, never seen one of those before.
Gave it a little wiggle and it comes out leaving a hole into the FD.
Don't like the look of that, water going into FD does not sound like a good idea,
Bung seems to come out fairly easily , could it come out whilst riding?.:rob
I did try a search but nothing useful. I'm sure one of you will know what it is and why.
Good to be back

It's designed to let water into the final drive due to a sudden internal pressure drop through cooling, eg fording rivers. An anti-fording device.

Built in water ingress failure device. Word is that the final drives are becoming more reliable of late and BMW are starting to lose money on replacement parts......

its a breather for the final drive:thumby:

Thanks, I can understand that, but do not understand why. No previous bikes had breathers in the final drive unless it was a different design and I never noticed it.

I believe some of my older bikes had sealed for life final drives and some needed the oil changed

don't forget it can also be activated by unwariy ukgser having a jolly holiday in the alps, thrashing up and down without taking heed of the altidude pressure change, that's why you always get to the top and find all the placed already snatched by "de germans", they`re not realy sunbathing just letting the FD acclimatize!:aidan

My last bike was shaft drive and had a breather on the casing. Specially designed to release excess oil if the thing was ever overfilled.
