Hi All,

I am looking for a little advice please.

I purchased a second hand Armas Jacket (ebay) which had very little use and I believe to have been about 6 months old.

I have now owned it for just over a year and used it a lot in all weathers and it has proven to be a fantastic piece of kit.

Recently however the fancy "lock out" waterproof plastic zip has started to open as I am riding.

It tends to split open near my bellybutton and then carries on opening upwards!

I have contacted Rukka and asked if it can be repaired under their 5 year warrantee and they have said yes it can,

however.....they will only do it if I have proof of original purchase !!

As I said, I bought it used and do not have the original purchase receipt.

Any body had a similar experience and can make any suggestions please ??

Many thanks in advance .

Have you not got a receipt from Paypal or details of the Ebay auction you can pass to them, Rukka seem to have an excellent reputation for customer service.

You could always lubricate the zip, and run it up and down a few times, that fixed it on mine. You can get proper "lube" for it but I do mine with one of these every few months http://www.amazon.com/einszett-914806-Gummi-Pflege-Rubber/dp/B004B8GTQG

If you fancy a run up to Warrington at the weekend, you can give it a whirl and see if it helps.

Hi Fluffmeister,

Thanks for the tips but I do use Silicone Lubricant on the zip from time to time when it gets a little stiff.
However I am pretty sure that this time the zip needs replacing !!

Cheers

Is the rubber part of the zip on both sides in good condition without any signs of cuts or nicks or slivers of rubber missing?

Without having to teach a grandmother to suck eggs, but I do know of a couple of people that had the same trouble ... until I pointed out that they were't pulling the rubber bottom of the zip right in to, and as far over and as far down, as it will go AND then moving the little lock lever down to lock it, before zipping it up ;)

Never had a problem with mine I'm afraid. Three years use but probably 50,000 miles.

Mind you, two pocket zips bust and heavy wearing on the collar ... I do expect a replacement or repair over the winter months ;)

:beerjug:

Same happens on mine whne in needs cleaning and lubing; or when I don't put the 2 ends together properly.

FWIW, with my jacket I was given an expensive looking lube pen like big fatmarker pen...

No doubt you can buy it as an expensive GoreTex accessory, but it is made by Edding, product code 8150 so you can just pay lot of money for it on Amazon :http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000MPOSMO

FYI, there was some discussion a few years back on this site about these zips : http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?225648-Gore-lockout-thingy!&p=2805871&viewfull=1#post2805871

Mine (three years old, around 30k miles) always, but always, had the lock lever properly in place, but over time some cuts and nicks appeared leading to the closure operation becoming stiffer in the affected zones despite regular application of the silicon lube. It did not self open. I kept the receipt and after speaking to the supplier returned it for repair. I was offered, but did not need, a loan jacket. Five weeks later I had a call to say the jacket was back and it was couriered to me foc with a new zip and lube pen.

As to the missing receipt, it might be worth checking when the Armas came to market. If that was within five years - the guarantee period - by definition it should still be covered.

Hi All and many thanks for your comments so far :thumb

So to summerize :-

I have checked the zip and there is no wear or tear to any of the rubber rails etc :thumb

So is the consensus that lack of lubrication will cause the zip to self-open ?

My zip action is smoother with silicon but how would a lack of lubricant cause it to mechanically open ??? :nenau

Perhaps because a lack of lube may cause the two elements of the closure not to mate correctly?

More that it prevents it from closing properly. It is also worth checking that the small channels in the zip are not clogged or blocked with a bit of fluff.

I find I sometimes have the same problem with my sandwich bags when A breadcrumb gets in the way ;-) ............................ only had my Rukka 6 months and have had no problems so far.

HI , got the same problem, bought a month ago from infinity in York a Athos jacket ,used 6 times and zip closure came open 5 times !! the closure system has been lubricated and checked for correct locking , went back to York and they said that the early closure sytem sometimes does this they have a modified closure sytem that is fitted to all new jackets , mine has got to go back to rukka to have the new system fitted . Not good for a £500.00 jacket

Had the same problem with mine, check the zip has not jumped over as it needs to be in the correct track so to speak, I adjusted mine back over and its all fine now.
Cheers
Lee

I've had a similar issue with the lock out system on my Athos jacket - it's gone back to Rukka, along with my trousers which came apart on the lower inside left leg.

just used my new rukka argonaut for the last week. Jacket is new, zip is and was lubricated by me. Bent over tonight at the supermarket and was conscious of the zip / lock thingy. Anyhow, on the ride home, it was open. So thought maybe its a design that if put under sideways / bending type stress it opens as a zip fail safe measure - you know to protect the zip etc...then I thought I can't be because if you're in a crash, you'd want the zip to stay closed and keep jacket covering you...got home and checked: both lock and rubber were correctly inserted..so do I wait and see if this was a once off or start the long winded return option...Only bought it cos they had such high ratings..! oh well, guess i got 5 years to work this out..:) Overall though, bit disappointed. Bloody expensive, loads of research and 3 days to a zip opening...

Mine used to do the same until I spray lubed it with silicon and ran a fluff free cloth down the two mating surfaces. The smallest amount of muck in the closure and it will come undone. Not a good system in my opinion and I would revert to an ordinary zip system in future.

mine is brand new, bar 4 days riding. I greased the zip on Sunday night.....

Not heard of that I have to say ... But I use plenty of silicone lube every couple of weeks or so as I commute most days. I am sure that Rukka who usually have an excellent customer service will race/repair if it is still buggered .... Let's hope so. Keep us updated
