Dear 'more mechanically minded than me' members,

I've just done the Lands end-John O'Groats ride and the bike was good, the odd fart in the air filter box accompanied by the occasional backfire. It also stalled once or twice when stationary at idle.
It did rain a lot on the last couple of days ( still loved it!)
Since this I have ridden it on and off for a couple of weeks. The other day it started really losing power, I thought it was going to totally cut out but it kept going.
I nursed it back from work that evening. At the weekend I drained the tank, some water present.Replaced the fuel filter and cleared the water pipe thing that fexes to the filler neck. I then went off to buy fel on the bike and it totally died. Having cooled down for about an hour it restarted and spluttered its way home. I have now replaced the hall effect sensor thing and reset the timing. No backfires this time so I set off again. After about one mile the bike began to misfire so I turned back home. got back again.
On turning the ignition I notice the fuel pump making a different noise ( a bit like an elephant trumpeting!) I have also realised that the fuel gauge is not working since I took it all out to change the filter, the fuel light remains on.
ANY ideas would be gratefully received as long as they don't involve digging holes to bury the bike or boxes of swan vestas to torch it!

I am out of ideas now...that said I will now douse the sidestand switch with WD40

Thanks

A simple question but it just maybe the answer.... Did you check the pipes are not kinked or on trapped against something when you put the tank back on?...... Just a thought as I know I have done that.

Children,children,children.........

Hello all,
Thanks for the reply Mike ( I'm ignoring the less positive one! ).
All the pipes are not bent BUT I do believe I had connected the two fuel pipes from the tank to the wrong pipes from the bike, if that makes sense.
Adjusted the angle of dangle at which I had fitted the fuel pump plate to the tank. ( ALWAYS mark its position prior to removal...............retrospect eh!)
I now have a working fuel guage and a bike that runs!
Minor snag is the loss of power at approx 3.5k revs which tried to buckaroo me off the bike!
Still I'm trying to get someone to pop round to tune it for me, I'm based in Farnham (Surrey) if anyone cares to volanteer or knows a man that can.
So thanks for the slightly dissapointing response to my crisis:confused:..........(not you mike:thumb)
I'll keep you in the picture of what the problem turned out to be.

Good place to start if your not mechanically minded would be to replace the air filter and plugs, get em from Motorbins motorworks or sherlocks and whack em in, nice and straight forward job.
Check that yer throttle cables are seated properly aswell.
Failing that buy a Honda:thumb

It could have been any number of things, and the info supplied wasn't really enough to warrant an educated guess .

Just as well, as how were we to know you'd reconnected the pipes the wrong way, and replaced the fuel pumphousing out of kilter.

Any of our guesstimates would have sent you on a wildgoose chase to no avail.

have the same problem, bike brought back to shop for the third time,
they cant figure it out and nobody from this site even tried.

She's alive I tell ye!..ALIVE!

Hi,
Thanks for all the responses to my dilemma.
I found a man that can ( could and did!).
The problem that was the root of all evil to my case was a throttle position sensor. The black two inch squarish box attached to the nearside inlet business on the bike. Mine had a visible gap to the top of the casing and I can only assume that water had found its way in during my trip in Scotland.
The man that could ( BMW guy ) tested it and said he was not 100% it was that . But since we replaced it my bike runs fine! I also replaced the Hall sensor but this did not make any difference ( other than to my wallet!)

Thanks to all you who replied, I said I would let you know when all was resolved.............so here it is!
Thanks all:)
Chod
