Anyone body got any dos and donts on running in ADV first new GS and wondering if anything to look out for or sound advice.

Not too fast
Not too much load
Lots of gear changes
Make the most of riding at a leisurely pace for the last time in your life;)

Don't do like I did, and drop it after 400kms...they're VERY heavy!
As mentioned, avoid motorways, take B-roads and get up and down the gears...keep an eye on the oil too.

your all a load of softies they are so overengineered just cane the tits off it!! sunder warranty int it? :)

Upto 4000rpm and sometimes above for short periods for the first 600 miles. Remember VARIANCE is the key factor but don`t be frightened of caning it now and again (more now than again). Several "knowledgeable" people are then using quality 20w50 multigrade with great success rather than semi-synthetic oil and the oil consumption has dropped to virtually zero. Using fully synthetic will stop the running in process. Hope this helps.

Neil........this has been debated many times over and there's way too much for an easy summary...trya search from the top buttons on the page for running in etc etc, then settle back with a beer and get reading!!

PS My favoured approach...ring the neck of the bastard then go out and do it again :D

(new adv owner too:) )

Ps......take a read HERE

Brilliant thanks GUYS

Shit!!!

Don't blame me if it goes bang though!!! (Blame Slimbo...he said it first ;) )

:D

PS If you read that site that I linked, then compare it to all the rest of the advice including the bwm manual, it all pretty much says the same I reckon......give it some, but not to excess, don't overload but don't hold back..in otherwords, treat it like it is what it is... a new bike that you're not completely sure of but really want to have some fun on.

AND RING ITS BLEDIN NECK!!!:D

I agree with Slimbo & Fanum. Make sure its warmed up and drive the shite out of it. Its the best way to run in an engine. This idea of sitting at 60 mph in top gear for a 1000 miles is mcuh worse for the bike - causes glazing of the bores and big-end bearings etc. The bike needs heat cycles and load to bed it in. If you have any doubts, give me the bike for a weekend and I'll sort it out for you :D

For fear of repeating myself, warm her up, vary the revs and the load - let her slug a bit in 4th or 5th, then rev her up and down all day long. Turn it off and do it all over again and again.

But most of all - Enjoy it !
