running in oil

Hi all,

I picked up my new GS 3 weeks ago, due to various lame excuses (been out of the country etc, etc) I have only get rid of 200 ish of the <4000 rpm run in miles. I have kept a careful eye on the oil, which you guessed it, has gone down (they allways......i know).
The dealer (CW) told me that the 'running in oil is thiner than standard, the engineer will furnish you with a bottle to top it up during the running in period'.
The engineer said that they 'didn't have any running in oil (maybe it is 2 exepensive ), but this stuff will do' and he hands me some 10W40 (if I could see clearly in the gloom this morning.

question is: Does any one know if this 'thicker' oil is gonna have an adverse effect on the engine.

do we worry too much?

Sounds like total bollocks to me.

It should be on 10/40 mineral oil for at least 6000 miles.

I change my oil every 3000 miles,and always use Castrol GP mineral.

Apparently mineral oil's the stuff to use for the first few thousand miles, rather than synth, or semi.

I think the bikes come from the factory with 10w/40 in them, maybe at some time in history it was normal to use a "running in oil" but I don't think so these days. The most important thing about running in an engine is how you treat it, not what oil it's got. Don't thrash it from cold, don't labour it at low revs, etc. It won't do any harm to exceed the 4000 rpm limit from time to time, and use compression braking whenever you can.

Castrol GP 10w/40 is absolutely fine for the first 12-24,000 miles of the bike's life, depending on how quickly it stops burning the stuff. After that point you might want to change to 10w/50 or 20w/50, depending on the climate where you live (see the chart in the bike handbook) as thhe slightly heavier oil may make the engine sound less "agricultural"

Having said that I'm sure it would be fine using 10w/40 for ever.

About 20,000 as I have read on here
