Running low on oil

Ahem. Thats all well and good, except recently I was reading a thread about clutch slip on a Triumph Rocket 3 where this seppo had done his own first service and had put car oil in the thing.

maybe he put in fully synthetic, or the rocket 3 has a weak clutch

I still cant understand why the manufacturer is so specific about exact variants of oil. Even the BMW book states only a certain API spec is to be used.

Nice though the the bloke states at the top "Reproduced below you'll find a Service Bulletin concerning the use of SJ rated oil in BMW motorcycles. It's all I needed to stop using Castrol 20-50 in my bikes and switch to BMW oil exclusively." Not bad when BMW recommend castrol 20/50, and the service bulletin was dated 1998.

My brand new 10 day old RT manual states "Engine oils of api classification SF or better."

I run all my bikes on 10w40 semi synthetic car oil, the Fazer 600 has done 10,000 miles on it, my Fazer 1000 did 24000 miles on it, all the bikes i've ever had has run on it, right back to the late seventies, I never just run around the block, or commute though, if I'me out, i'me likely to be out all day, I think its more important that the bike is well warmed up before thrashing and that its changed regulary, it suits me, but you do whatever you thinks right for you

I agree entirely. I have mates who have been running wet clutch bikes (various Hinckley triumph triples, BMW GS650, Yamaha XT singles, CBR600, suzuki GSXR 750.) on semi synthetic 10/40 car oil for several years without problem. I read an 'oil' article in an american motorcycle magazine a few years ago, it stated that only the very thin oils(0w/30, and 5w/30, etc) have the friction modifiers added. I think it all a marketing exercise. There are people on this forum who insist on putting motorcycle specific oil in BMW boxer engines eg: castrol GP, GPS. God only knows why.

My brand new 10 day old RT manual states "Engine oils of api classification SF or better."

My 4 year old 12GS manual states - " oil of api classification SF, SG or SH.", so from that spec i'm using Silkolene Super 4, 20W-50, (recommended by Silkolene for the 12GS) if everyone goes by the manual, there's no confusion.

Whats wrong with using Duckhams 20/50 minerial oil only costs £8.99 per gallon its what goes in my 1969 bonny and its GREEN in colour....

There's nothing wrong with using Duckhams 20/50.......as long as it meets the spec stated in your manual
