Recently I noticed a return of the "Phut Phut" noise on the over-run. I've also noticed that the header pipes are a different colour. One light blue, one straw. So thinking that one side is running cooler than the other decided to have a look at the fuel system in general. Re checked valve clearance and balanced the carbs. Replaced the carb o rings, cleaned out the jets, balanced the carbs. Checked for air leaks. Then played again with the float hights. Balanced the carbs again. To recheck my theory, bought a laser guided temp sensing tool. I have a difference in 20 deg between cyclinders but the blue headered side is running cooler!!!! Still phutting on the overun too........Argh! driving me nuts. Any ideas?

I had something similar to this recently and I re-did the idle mixture, try winding out the adjuster and then reset it worked for me.

Another total carb strip and clean/refit/balance today running ok again. As a youth I used to read US “Dirt Bike” magazine. One of the contributors used to say Bing carbs were like a brick with a hole drilled in them. Always used to make me titter. Even when I’m stripping them down for the umpteenth time. At least it’s less often now my crankcase breather has been re routed into a bottle. In cold weather I would have the slow running circuit bunged up with breather spooge. Head temps are now the same and the bike ticks over like a clock again.........for a while anyway!

Glad it’s sorted. I used to love Dirt Bike magazine back in the 1970’s. Great writing. Remember ‘Super Hunky’? He’s still around. I think the full quote was ‘ what’s the difference between a Bing carburettor and a brick with a hole drilled in it? The brick is more efficient.’ He was referring to carbs fitted to 2 strokes obviously!
