Mine has been used all winter and the weather has really got under the paint on the back lower frame rails. There is also the odd mark where anti-rub farkles have (erm) rubbed. :(

I cleaned up the back frame with a Dremel treated with Loctite anti rust and used a zinc based paint. But ideally I would like to have the frame powder coated. Can anyone offer any strip-down tips?

When I do mine in the Autumn, we can do it together mate:D

It's not a bad job at all. Here are some links to get you started, have a look at the top two. It helps if you've got a copy of the RePROM, or id guess a Haynes manual.The most difficult part is keeping the front end stable once you split it. I put an axle stand under each cylinder with some packing on to steady mine. When my new (second hand) subframe arrives I'll be getting it powder coated and fitting it.

I was thinking about finding a used subframe - until I saw the cost.

@st247 have you seen this?

Seller kaysmithgreen o79763565I6

The seller's details are worth hanging on to. Though, I would rather have my own guy do the powder coating.

I have an Eazy Rizer bike lift but it uses the footrests so wont be ideal if the frame goes missing. I'll be seeing if there is another way to hold up the front end.

I did look at that listing a while ago, but by the time you added on the cost in the body of the listing it worked out too expensive. I picked mine up from evil bay for just over 125 delivered which was pretty good. It has took six months or so to get one for that price though.

That is seriously good for something costing £1100 new. Maybe the jigging price wasn't so bad after all. ;)

Do they differ from Mk1 to Mk3?

There may be some differences. The only one I'm aware of is a difference before and after 2007 to do with the rear brake switch mounting. I guess you could have a look at one of the online catalogues to confirm the part numbers. Another one was list today 99p start, link.

NOG often do reduced cost labour for bikes over 6 years old in the winter... Get them to strip it down then you can get it powder coated :thumb2

I'll look into that. Dremel Loctite and paint are ok for now but from experience a good powder coat is so much better.
