:blast after some very carefull care and lots of cleaning of my 2009 gs adventure and i may ad no winter riding on salty roads my rear frame is starting to rust through from the inside...with small blister like bubbles in the very thin paint finish..........is this a common fault or not??? as the warranty is out what can i do???........help!!

Sorry after that time, I doubt you'll have a recourse unless it's covered by an extended warranty? (just reread OP) Others will have better knowledge or experience.
Just hope it's not structural.
I'm sure someone will come along and give you some useful advice about just getting on it and don't bother cleaning it etc etc:blast

mmmm

must admit ive thought about that......but when it comes down to it,,,,its an expensive lump to rust after only 2 years.......

I don't think that rust will be coverdale by the warranty but I can be wrong :)

If its a manufacturing defect, I'm sure it will be covered. BMW are generally good with out of warranty claims. FWIW their cars come with a 10 year anti corrosion warranty, and yes I know the bikes have a completely different warranty, but you should have a case if there are no scratches or dents where it has rusted (i.e. nothing caused by a scratch or stone that would have gone through the paint and caused an unpainted surface to start rusting).:rob:thumb

The BMW Motorrad extended warranty does not cover corrosion

I think you will find that the warranty you are referring to is a 'perforation warranty' ....... in other words it has to corrode and produce a hole from the inside out :augie

The paint used now is water based and no where near as thick or resistant as the old oil based paints. Also, the rear subrame gets hit by road crap, stones, gravel, road salt etc so will chip or get damaged and then you will get rust.

Best thing is to spend a day rubbing down the rust patches and use hammerite smooth black to repaint. This will give you a good and more tougher finish, Do your centre stand whilst you are there because that takes a real hammering:thumb

You won't get that repaired under any sort of warranty. It's all part of teh joy of owning a bike in this country:thumb

try powder coating

gents ,
when I spot some rust or corrosion on frames and sub frames, I usually , strip the frame and Sub frame and send to a local painters that has the Facility for shot blasting and Polyester powder coating. If your lucky enough to have one near that paints items which goes offshore. These usually have a guarrented life for 10 to 20 years. The last time i had this sort work done , i had the frame, subframe and all my brackets shot blasted , etch primers and powder coated black for £ 100 , its was money spents , because when i sold the bike three years later , it was still in good condition.

In the north east of england i use Roger at north east powder finishings ltd number -

0191 4950698

the turn around is usually a week.

hope this helps , ive used him for years and always good quality:thumb2
