My centre stand is rusting in the middle after 6 months and 3000 miles. Is this a record? Do you think I can quote Sale of Goods Act and get a new bike? Or just a new centre stand?

its seems to be a problem on a few bikes, mine has rust across the same spar, think its to do with the very thin paint BM has used and the exposure to the road salts over the winter period...

You could ask for a new centre stand or just coat it with protective film or even a respray with hammerite!

Not even sure I will ask BM to replace at the service. I'm inclined to coat with black waxoyl (all my fasteners are coated with clear waxoyl) and maybe cover with a bit of split plastic pipe. Its directly behind the front wheel catching all the grit etc so I'n not sure any paint would last.

Having this problem with a lot of bikes a lot of it is due to they have to use water based paints & its just not as good

Mine's the same.
It's in the firing line from the rear tyre, so gets shot-blasted, particularly if you ride back roads or loose surfaces.
I shall enquire about a replacement at my 6,000 service....and maybe my soon to arrive Motorrad Concepts hugger will help a little?

Guys, I've had this problem on previous bikes and have found a solution which has worked well - amalgamating tape.

This rubbery tape when stretched bonds to itself and to the surface which is applied creating a watertight seal. You can get it from Maplins.

I just wrapped some of this around the exposed central part of stand and hey presto instant protection. The tape being rubbery its good at taking the shotblasting from the back wheel and being black you hardly notice it. If it gets unsightley you simply cut it off and apply more.

works for me...give it a try.

Yup

Methinks Hammerite will solve it.

Another project for this weekend

Good idea! I've got some tape for the boat so I'll dig it out.
