About 3 months ago my warped front discs were replaced under warranty. Over the last 2 weeks or so, durinf which time I've done about 700 miles, rust has appeared on both sides of both front discs. I've not noticed any drop in performance (although haven't been paying attention) and the pads aren't excessively worn.

Is this normal and and can the rust be removed? Or are we now talking about replacement as the only cure?

Cheers

Gonzo......

The brake discs are stainless steel and therefore cannot rust.

The oxidisation is in fact traces of ferrous metal contained within the sintered OE brake pads which get applied to the disc surface during use.

It's totally harmless and will not affect the efficiency of the brakes.

If you wish to remove it during washing use a scotch type soft abrasive pad and voila....it's gone....until the next time.......

... or just ride the bloody thing, and the small amount of rust will dissapear....

Now there's a hoary old myth, Chris. Depending upon the composition of the material which is universally known as "stainless steel", it will rust to a greater or lesser extent.

I'm sure there'll be a metallurgist along in a moment, to give us chapter and verse....

...this has got to be a piss take

My disc's have just been replaced under warranty and are rusting. I would imagine he means where the disc's attach to the carrier not the actual braking surface, that's where mine are going, yet again.

They've only done 300 miles since they were fitted 2 weeks ago. Cheap shite steel if you ask me :( My ABS ring thingy is also showing signs too. I'll repeat myself yet again, "the bikes are made from cheap shitty materials and BM need a good kicking for charging what they do!"

Ahhh, feels better now I've got that off my chest..........again

Maybe this will help describe the problem...

Stainless Discs

They are not "Stainless" they are "Stain resistant" if they were stainless they wouldn't have the brake effinciancy, cars have regular steel sometimes cast iron and GS's can have cast iron discs which are much more efficient than stainless.
As dutchman says its easily removed.

The older non-rusty disk has some sort of plating (Zinc?) on the non-friction area, the new disk doesn't.

Personally I'm not bothered by it but I took the photos to illustrate the difference between the newer and older spec disks.

try using wonder wheels wheel cleaner, it takes rust straight off!!

They all rust on the edge. Don't get pissed about it. The end of the disks will go black in time and you won't see it.

Walti, got the same 'rust' marks on my discs too. No worries, scrubs right off during washing with some fine steel wool or Scotch Brite pad.

Yeah, right. I woke up this morning and was trying to think of something funny...........and guess what, rusty brake discs came straight into my head.

Any, from someone who bought the bike to ride and not to dismantle/obssess about/compensate for something lacking elsewhere in ones life, thanks to those that have taken this question seriously and helped me out. I'll worry about the rust when the brakes stop working.

And to those whose only mode of response is piss-taking as a way of filling an otherwise empty life - feck off. :dabone

...until Walti posted the pictures, I think people were under the impression that you were talking about rust on the face of the disc - hence the remarks.

If you're looking to get no piss taking, you're on the wrong forum :dabone :D

So why would a question about rust on the face of the discs not be serious? I know the answer now, but I had to ask in order to get it!
