Salisbury Plain Ride - Sunday 19th February

Hi John

Pleased to hear all is sorted with your bike.

The lay-by proposed looks quite small and if I park there, will take most of it up which isn't very sociable. So I'll park in Pewsey and ride to the lay-by you propose and see you there 09:30ish for a 10:00 kick off.

Mike.

Something that may be closer for you is to go to the car park by the canal at SN10 3PH approx. 3 minutes away from me in next village - from main road, over canal bridge, immediate left and plenty of room as near moorings for canal boats

We (DrJm and I)are in, if we can decide where to meet! I'm happy to park at the Barge with Ade (did you phone them?) and ride down, I'll have the car and trailer and the layby doesn't sound big enough!

10am ready for the off? When the start point is agreed, can someone post a grid ref for it so I can put it in the GPS please?

And, my bike will do at least 6 hrs without an oil change. But I might need to stop to fit more bling!

Martin,
the meet point is the layby as I understand it - SN8 4LF.
I did call the pub and they seemed very relaxed about it but I got "staff" & not the owner. Probably worth a call to make sure.
See you Sunday.

cheers
axa

Ade, are you parking at the Barge? That post code shows up as someone's house on google earth.

Layby is LARGE

The meet is the layby - it is large and double wide so will take at least 3 cars with trailers. I have 2 cars and trailers parking at mine, windchuffer is staying somewhere else and will ride in. So I am sure you can park there. Based on numbers, Axa and Berin will be teh only ones needing the layby I think so loads of room. If there is a problem on the day, I can take even more cars at mine!! Just prefer not to if possible. Dollyrocket has seen the layby and should agree on size. The Barge has a car park but I'm not sure how much they will appreciate space being taken up. As mentioned a few posts up, there is also a parking spot in All Cannings near canal or Pewsey at Bakers car park if you are concerned.

MEET POINT

layby at postcode SN8 4LF and OSGB: SU 09379 62600

9.30 for 10 start

What wll you be riding - GS? We might bump into you and I will say hello when next in the bakery

Not the GS although i have taken it across the plain a few times. Bought a 2000 Suzuki 400DRZ from Hustler a few weeks back. Anyone is always welcome to come in and say hi.

Seems like its only thee & me at the layby & since its on the way to the barge we might as well try it first. Should be ok for just us 2 and if not we can carry on to the barge.

cheers

Just realised I haven't had a new reg plate made up for my trailer. Hope Plod's still asleep, or arresting more journalists.

Layby is big enough to get 2-3 large vans and cars+trailer in (even with 'special' parking skills.

I don't care too much though as I will be across the road in Johns driveway :D

JK - Will your neighbours mind a load of dirt bikes all starting up around your sleepy village?

I would have loved to join you all on my Husky TE450 but sadly me and my bike aren't ready. :(

Need:-

Road Tax
Insurance - (Me and the bike)
Helmet
Body Armour

Definitely another time though. :thumb2

Accidentally got embroiled in a afghan exercise but the army boys didn't seem to mind, in fact they showed off their tank by spinning the turret around and waving. (If they hadn't had waved and just pointed the turret I would have sh*t myself :)

Another good ride. Thanks to John for organising & leading. Was pretty surreal being on the 'plain and buzzed by low flying Chinooks on manoeuvre practice.

PM me if anyone wants the GPS log of the day emailed to them.

Mike.

Yeah, a great day. Thanks John. It really was interesting being amongst all the military manoeuvres. The Afghan bazaar was bizarre! Even being submerged in a muddy pool failed to dampen my spirits. Well mostly :D

Thanks - great day out with a great group.

Not every day that you see people not only trail riding but also mud diving (Dave!) and swimming (Mike!). At least we know now how to resuscitate a drowned Honda...

Also, first time I have been stopped by a Gurkha with a gun and asked if I am on the exercise! And riding by an Afgan "village" market was the strangest....

Hopefully see you all soon.

Here's a pic taken about the time we were chatting with the Range Warden :augie

Regarding that Restricted Byway...

the one you got stopped on - just had confirmation from Wiltshire CC that it is a Byway (BOAT) and is not restricted. Has been since 2009 apparently!!

Anyway, it is called Figheldean 6 (FIGH6) and is still shown on maps as a restricted. I have made a request for the sign to be updated.

Remember you can get an online map from Wilts CC at

Cheers
