Wednesday night a light frost dry roads. My local council (Chiltern District) salted the bloody roads, GREAT , here we go, greasy roads and corrosive spray to wash off . They are only two months early.

Fekked if they do, fekked if they don't.

I've been at fireworks parties in 4 inches of snow before now.......this year, it rained, but yesterday morning I had frost on the car 'screen.
The day before, it was 13-14 degrees once the sun had warmed itself up and dragged its sorry arse up over the horizon.

What would YOU do if you were a town civil engineer, or whatever the ferk the bods who make those calls describe themselves as ?

I was not expecting to find salt down when I came through Amersham on Wednesday evening. I have not given my bike the ACF50 treatment yet. A good wash and spray will be done this weekend. Last winter Chiltern council dumped tons of salt on the roads.

you know best i guess

I'm one of the bods that makes the decision of when we go gritting.

Wednesday night/ Thursday morning indicators from the Met Office stated temps would fall below freezing in my area with a hoarfrost, i assume you know what a hoarfrost is. Therefore government guidelines and the TCPA say local Councils should grit roads.

I can just imagine all the moaning should you slide on the hoarfrost and crash your bike or car and the Council have to waste your public money to pay out on an insurance claim had they not carried out their duty to grit the roads :comfort

As a car driver I am glad you did/do under such circumstances, last winter several times, my council didn't bother on really slippery mornings, obviously to save a few pounds!

As a biker I am pee'd off as I know my bike can't take it!

Good news is all this rain would have washed it away so I can go out tomorrow, no worries!

You should have said earlier, i'm sure Mother Nature would have cancelled the frost if she'd known!!

Just imagine how this thread would have gone if you'd hit a patch of ice instead of salt

Yep, highways/council or whatever they are these days can't do right for doing wrong!

Buzz, I am not complaining about the council putting salt down, I just was not expecting it cos it has been so mild. Just annoyed that the first salting was before I could prep my bike. I ride all year, all weather and have had plenty of black ice moments. So I am happy that the council do their bit to prevent icy roads.

Yes I Know what a hoar frost is, I also know that on a completely bone dry road salt laying on the surface will reduce traction.
Does the local council just follow what the met office says as a butt covering exercise regardless of what the local condition actually are.
Where I live regularly has some of the lowest temps in the country and the roads are icy because they have not salted. Now I know why.

My Council pay for a service which gives a report for not only just our local borough but also our coldest roads only, we only put down salt when and where it's needed. We don't salt if it's cold 50 miles away !!!! We also don't salt if it's on dry roads even if it's minus 5.

I suggest you contact your local council or look on it's website as most, as mine, put our policy online showing when and where we will put salt down and what action we take in all weather conditions. I would suggest you have more chance of sliding on ice rather than salt if your riding or driving sensibly to the road conditions.

..........any particular reason this is posted in the WC technical section :blast

We need a moderator to move it ..... Nu ..... Oh feck ..... :D
