Dud to the ferry not arriving till 5.30pm and it will probably be an extra 90 mins by the time I get away next May, I have booked a night at the hotel Picos de Europa which is not far from the port.
Has anybody stayed there and what is parking like?

I looked at that place for earlier this month. I wanted to stay in Santander to visit the Faro Santander gallery and Centro Botin before sailing home.
It looks sub optimal. The entrance to the hotel is in an alleyway. Streetview link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/66iTQ2C5omBLBDm27
There is a cafe with the same name in the main street. The hotel seems to be above and behind the cafe. You can see the blue H at the entrance to the alley. There are public bike spaces outside the cafe. You could probably park in the alley as well. https://maps.app.goo.gl/p4Nhb9NUgoyJt7rs7
As with most places in Spain, I would park on the street if needed. None of the bikes seems to have any security on them in Santander.

As I was booking very late, the options were not numerous within walking distance of the city centre. I ended up staying in the Ibis Stlyes about 10 mins from the port. 30 min walk to the Faro gallery or 10 minute ride on a #12 bus that costs £1.10. I used the bus .
The Ibis does evening meals from 7.30pm. Free garage parking and breakfast was included in the room rate.

If you decide to switch, make sure you look at streetview to see the slip road is only accessible from one side of this road linking two roundabouts. https://maps.app.goo.gl/8zkMpHMMRc39PXrt8

Another on my shortlist. Street parking but lots of it. Right in the city centre by the bus station. Hotel Abba https://maps.app.goo.gl/a5GW6ermEFcw5PA78 - I was swung by the free garage and breakfast at the Ibis.

Cant beat Hotel Santemar....
In Santander 10 mins ride from ferry....

I used that one a while ago when I had an early ferry home. Nice location near the seaside and a cluster of bars nearby for food. It was very expensive when I looked for a fairly late booking, so presumably nearly full on that date. Back to a more reasonable £60 if you stay this week but dearer next May and perhaps a 50% step up from the OP's budget.

I stayed at hotel los Guardeses in Solares. It’s around 15 minutes from the ferry port, has secure parking, reasonably priced with friendly staff, very nice courtyard for breakfast or drinks and is well located for local restaurants . You can find it on Booking .com. Recommended.
