Hi

I was hoping to fit a standard Garmin nuvi sat nav on my 2006 1200GSA but have come across a power problem.

The unit I have doesn’t have a dedicated bike mount so I thought I’d use a weatherproof universal case, then regulate the input power from 12 volt down to 5 with an inline regulator. I've tried coming out of the headstock Canbus socket with a ‘Nippys’ GPS lead, through a regulator, then into the sat nav. Only problem is, after I fit the lead and regulator, I've found the power from the Canbus won't turn off with the key.

I'm obviously no electrician so have been wondering; do you guys think it’s possible to fit my standard sat nav and save a few quid, or, will I have to bite the bullet and save up for a dedicated bike one so that I don’t drain my battery whilst I’m out and about?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts

P

A diode should solve your problem or a better regulator. Basically your unit is feeding power back leading the bike to think you have a charger plugged in. It happened to me when I connected a noise filter between the power and my coms.

You have waited for the minute or so for the canbus to actually shut down the power I take it?

Hi Guys thanks thanks for your replies :bow.

Gazza, I should have said, I did give it a good 10 - 15 mins to make sure that the Canbus should have shut down.

Marki, is there a regultor / diode you recommeded I try?

Thanks again

I know it may be a daft question but why do you need to step down the voltage to 5v?

If it's a car satnav it will be designed to run on a 12v supply the same as is provided at the headstock power outlet:nenau

No it's not, the power is reduced down from 12v in the cigarette power plug in thingy !

SatNavs usually use a USB plug.......which is 5v.
If you have one that plugs directly into the cigarette lighter socket, then the plug will have circuitry which will step it down to 5v.

Diode drops half a volt. Say half an Amp max. That's a quarter Watt. A bog standard IN4001 will do it.
If the op pm's me his address I'll send him a slack handful.

Thanks again for the replies (and the offer of some diodes). I did however pick a few up today so I'll get one fitted and report on results.

Hi Paul

I have a Standard Garmin Nuvi mounted behind the Adv screen on my GS. No issues with weather getting to it when on the move and can be operated with gloves on. Will post a picture later. I have it plugged into a hard wired use socket.

This is my set up. USB wired direct to battery and tucks under the front lip of the tank cover to keep it out of the rain. The suction cup will not stick to the screen but cable tie around the brace keeps it secure.

I have a standard Nuvi mounted on my 06GSA, I dismantled the car cigarette lighter lead and used the circuit board as the in line regulator, I fed the input from the Canbus socket in the headstock, I have no problems with the Canbus switching off after a minute.
