Hi all.
I am just about to mount my new garmin satnav and wanted to run something by you all.

I wont use the satnav often so am not going to hard wire it.
I have bought a DIN plug to power the satnav from the aux plug (2020 GS).
I am also going to shorten the power loom so that it looks neat and then i can plug/ unplug the unit easily at will.

My only concern is that using the DIN it wont be 100% waterproof.

Any thoughts or recommendations ??
Cheers everyone.

I snipped the end off a ballon, stretched the cut end over the adapter and then put the USB through the neck. Never had any issues in heavy rain.

Ok - so you run your garmin totally off the usb plug - i like that idea
No issues with charging or it keep going into “pc docking mode” ?
Thanks Flaming T

I had a Garmin powered by the usb connecter as it could not be charged via the cradle.
It was ok for a while then started to play up. Often going into PC docking mode, failing to charge and i put it down to the vibration of the connection.

If you can wire it in permanently into the bike - it is the right thing to do.

Or better still - sell your garmin and use a quadlock and decent mobile phone powered from the auxiliary power socket

If you’re worried about waterproofing why not use the so-called hard wired connection instead? It would be easy enough to connect/ disconnect the wire from the connector under the fairing panel as and when you need it.

Hi steadysteve,
Which connector under the fairing panel - any pics ?
Thank you for the help .

Just to clarify. I have the Nav5 but I use the charging point with a dual USB socket. This runs a Drift Stealth camera on constant mode and also a Quadlock Bluetooth charger. No issues with either.

It’s the one that the standard BMW cradle would be connected to.
It resides under the panel on the right hand side. Easiest way to describe it is that it’s next to the right side fork leg, cable tied to the subframe.
It would be slightly more fiddly than a usb or cig lighter but it’s tucked away and protected from the elements .

there was a thread in the gps section which highlighted an adaptor that can be attached to the factory fitted gps mount to connect your garmin to.
