I have a form to complete on-line, it is going to take several sittings, so I am going to have to save it between sessions rather than starting from scratch each time. When I try to Save it I am asked in what way I want it saved, whether as a:
  • Word Document
  • Word Template
  • Word 97-2003 Document
  • OpenDocument Text
  • PDF or XPS
  • Other Formats
I'm fecked if I know. When I tried to save it as a Word Document (IIRC) I wasn't able to open it again because, and I quote, "cannot be opened because there are problems with the content". Upon pressing the Details button it offers the explanation that "the file is corrupt and cannot be opened".

Where do I go from here?

I'd go for "Word Document" which gives it a .doc file extension and saves it in a format that is readable by most word processing applications.

I'd go for PDF but I'm no expert by any means :nenau

Calling Cookie ... calling Cookie ....

When I did that it says that it is "unreadable". Any idea why that is? Might it be because the form is not intended for on-line completion- even though I am able to write things in the boxes?

Depends

On what format the original document is in. It may be set up to prevent it being saved in some way, avoid the PDF option as this format does not allow editing once it has been saved unless you have a specific PDF editor.

Can you not just minimise the form so it keeps open but in the background until complete, or stop fannying about on motorcycle forms and get some bloody work done!:augie

I forgot to mention ...

My 'puter is about 15 years old, it works OK, it runs on Vista, but it won't last forever obviously. Some time soon it will have to be upgraded or put out to grass and, if I'm right, all the stored info and files and pictures and... well, crap, will be transferred to the new one. Obviously I would like to still be able to read the stored documents, so will it matter how I elect to save them, or will, say, Word soon become obsolete and eventually inaccessible? :)

Hmm... At the top of the page it says "blah blah blah.docx - Microsoft Word." Is that any help?

Not really, to quote somebody you may know 'M off again :D for a few days so can't really leave the 'puter on.

.docx is a latest version of word

if you have that then save that... if you don't save it as .doc (97-2003)

do NOT save it as a pdf cos you won't be able do fuckall to it.... next time round....

:thumb2

pdf is universal.

that would be my choice if word.doc didn't work.

As said, a .pdf file can't be edited once saved unless you have a .pdf editor.
Options are:
1. save as word .doc ( 97-2003) assuming you have old version
2. Start filling out form and then minimise in background until finished
3. Print out form, complete in pen and ink and then scan as a .pdf file or similar and mail back.
4. Stay up late and fill the fecking form in in one go.

Option 5

Get somebody with a newer PC to downloads and save the file if you cant , then get them to resave it as 97-2003 and email it to you .

But what about what Lo-IQ says, will I be able to carry on filling the boxes when I return to it later?

pdf... is a portable document file it allows you to open it any place, but it does not allow you at alter it... (well that's not strictly true but good enough for now)

if the file opens and you can see it, with a .docx it would suggest that you have the latest software which is word 10 or MSoffice 2008

so save the file onto a easy to find part of your hard disc, give it a name like AAA1 or where your going so you don't forget where you left it...:thumb

then fill it in re save as v1.1 and send it to the chumpies... it's all good....

right I'm going now to cut the grass, the neighbours love it....:D
