Saving maps - "Pocket Streets Map" or "Garmin GPS Database"?

I've been playing with Mapsource today (not with the 2610 connected) - planning routes, waypoints, changing preferences, etc and found that one route has been saved as a "Microsoft Pocket Streets Map (.mps)" yet the same route has also been saved as a "Garmin GPS database".

Questions:
Did I do something different?

Should all my routes be saved as "Garmin GPS database" files?

MapSource used to save maps/waypoints with a .MPS extension

The latest version of MapSource saves them with a .GDB extension

.MPS obviously has a different program association on your PC
