Using the principle of it being better to ask a question and appear a fool rather than not ask one a be a fool ..........

I've bought a G4 intercom (i don't suppose it matters the make though to be honest). With the earphones, should you stick them to the cloth inner liner where your ears are or should you fold back the liner and stick the velcro patch to the hard liner / shell ?

I'm having problems getting consistant sound volume. The wife's Caberg flip front doesn't seem to have any problems. Would be better the other way around !!

As an aside, I've noticed that if i wear earplugs, I can't hear the intercom very well but if I don't, the road noise is somewhat loud ...... :blast

I would say put them behind the liner so that it's easier to get the lid on abd off your head without catching the speakers.

Placement of the speakers seems to be critical, so try to make sure they are directly over your ear canal. This way they are firing the sound straight down your ears.

How do you find the Scala system? I'm looking at a bluetooth system for the Hog as im tired of the cables.

Any feedback?

Thanks

Trev

I've been using the G4 for over a year now, in various helmets.
In the Arai TourX3, I had better sound when the speakers were placed outside the liner.
With the speakers fitted underneath the liner, they sounded a bit muted and muffled.

Note: be sure to update the G4 software patch to the latest version (ver. 2.2 I think). As it irons out a lot of bugs with the original software.

The G4's with the latest patch give a vast improvement in functionality.

If you want great sound together with ear protection then Custom Moulded ear pligs are for you 'maybe'? They can also be adapted for the G4 and for Autocom. :thumb2

Thanks for the extra info guys. I'll look into the software update. Lord knows how that improves the system but it's good to know it does.

I've had an appointment booked to get some ear moulds made but had wax in one ear so have been sorting that out first. Clear now so must re-book. I presume the ones with filters are the way to go ?

My own opinion thus far is that they work really well and it makes shorter as well as longer rides much better as my good lady and i can talk at the same time and therefore cancel out each others chatter ! Took about half an hour to fit them both and a bit of jigging about to get them to work but nowhere near enough to get me swearing so not long at all !

Hi Dave, no the ear plugs i'm talking about are called Soundear from Ultimate ear and they will also alter your G4 so that the custom moulded ear plugs plug straight into the G4.

Here is an example of the Sound Ear :- http://www.motorbikeadventures.co.uk/product.php?id_product=52

Regards

Mick

So with Ultimate Ear you put the plugs in your ears, don helmet and then plug a wire into the G4 unit ?

Anyone else have experience of these as there are no consistantly good or bad ones ? Only that they can be problematic and fiddly. Cost is about the same as I was going to pay for a custom set with 2 sets of filters.

Can I get moulds made by any ear specialist and send them to get made ?

Better start saving in anticipation !

Crikey you were going to be paying how much for filtered plugs :yikes

The SoundEar are made by us at Ultimateear, as Motorbike Adventures says they give you the best possible experience when combined with an intercom (bluetooth or wired). Filtered plugs will do the job but you've still got to contend with getting placement of the Scala's speakers in the optimum spot for sound and comfort.

With the SoundEar, no speakers in the helmet, the speakers are inside the ear plugs and they connect externally on the adapted headset. The headset adaption will cost you £35 in addition to the SoundEar.

Filtered plugs are £75 which includes us taking your impressions, if you get them done locally there is an additional cost of £25. :thumb

Hmmmm, got home and looked in Scala box to find no cable to connect units to the computer to update the software.............

None of my various cables has the right fitting. Looks like Scala will be getting a call !

With the custom earplugs above, you put the plugs in, don helmet and connect ........ BUT what about pulling plugs out when putting helmet on and it doesn't exactly seem easy to plug into headphone socket whilst wearing helmet ............. I must be tick  I also presume the speakers wired to the units detach without cutting ? Is the mic' the same as I think a cabled mic' might be better inside my X7 ?

Dave

When we adapt a bluetooth headset in most case our route in is to remove the speakers and fit a 3.5mm stereo socket at the headset end in to which our monitors plug in.

We allow sufficient length to ensure the connection is below the helmet at the shoulder allowing easy connection/re-connection when the helmet is worn.

We also fit a 3.5mm stereo plug to the now detached speakers to allow them to be re-connected at any stage.

Also if the impedance of the headset speakers and our monitors do not match we step up/down as necessary with resistors.

Hey Judgey, you about still ? I PM'd you before the NEC but not heard back. I'm keen to take this forward and get my sets modified.

Cheers,
Dave
