Scarpa Ribelle Lite HD

Thinking of going to the Lakes, can anyone recommend some snow shoes?

I am just waiting for someone to throw their hat into the ring….. asking about socks.
Costco's own brand merino, 3 x £11. its all about the right socks:)

Sealskinz merino wool mid weight ones.

That’s an answer by the way, not a question :D

Wait until it gets really miserable and the gloves question gets dragged out :blast

Long johns / thermal under layers are a game changer in cold weather! :rob I’d never be without mine now. For waterproofness get some light, packable over trousers. https://www.wiggle.com/p/berghaus-paclite-gore-tex-pant I have a pair of Fjallraven Vidda Pro trousers. https://www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/men/trousers/trekking-trousers/vidda-pro-trousers-m They’re ok but expensive. I also have a pair of Revolution Race RVRC GP trousers. Less than half the price and, in my opinion, just as good. https://www.revolutionrace.co.uk/men/trousers/walking-hiking-trousers/rvrc-gp-pants-men
I also have some lined soft shell trousers but you get very / too warm after a while.

Seriously, go and buy yourself a pair of Paramo Cascade trousers. They’ve got double zips down the outside of the legs so you can get them on or off over boots, you can vent them by unzipping the legs from the top and still do up pop studs to stop them flapping and they’re slightly insulated.

They’re not cheap but they are waterproof and breathable then stick a pair of good quality LJs on and you’ve got a winner.

I’m happy enough to just bung them on when I go out then ventilate as much as I need and they don’t feel clammy if you’ve got nothing underneath them.

Yep, merino mid weight long socks. :thumb
Gaiters too in wet weather. Stop the wetness going down your boots. I have some very similar to these. https://www.millets.co.uk/15895197/trekmates-cairngorm-gore-tex-gaiters-15895197
How robust are the straps going under your boots and can you replace them?

I bought a pair of Terra Nova Extremities gaiters years ago and the straps broke very quickly but at that time they didn’t sell replacements. Luckily a good friend of mine owned a shop selling a lot of their gear so he kicked off and I had new straps within a couple of weeks and less than a year later they changed them and I got a replacement pair.

I also had issues because they weren’t Goretex top to bottom so the upper half ended up wet then froze so I bitched about that so they changed it on the second generation ones I was given as replacements. I must have had hundreds of £ worth of gear replaced after kicking off and having the right person fighting my corner :D

Not had a problem with them so far. They’re a leather strap which can be undone at either end so yes, replaceable. Any good saddle maker could make some even stronger I have no doubt. I can’t remember what make mine are but fully gortex. I made sure they were. I got them from a shop up in the Lake District a couple of years ago. :thumb

I gave them another work out today walking up Pen-y-Ghent where you have a long section of stone steps that will send your toe nails black if your boots don’t fit properly and they passed that test.

I didn’t pass the test for moral fibre and turned back where it starts to flatten off a bit because it was tipping it down, it was 2c in the car park but significantly colder and windier higher up and I didn’t dare undo my rucksack to grab my coffee and a sandwich because everything in there would have ended up soaked :blast

Sound good, I've been looking for soft shell type trousers for a while so they might do the job

Due to a wide range of excuses these boots have been somewhat neglected and only used for short walks until Saturday just gone when I wore them for a stroll across a couple of fells giving a total approaching 10 miles.

The end result was dry feet, no damaged toe nails, no aching ankles so overall no need to sell them yet. We walked on a variety of surfaces including roads, loose footpaths, mini swamps, moderate sized rocks in gulleys and jumped/paddled across streams so apart from putting crampons on them and doing a bit of front pointing they had pretty much everything thrown at them.

Being realistic 10 miles is about average for what I’d expect to do on a day walk with variations according to height gain so it looks as if I might have made the correct choice.
