Scotland trip with the wife

Thinking of taking the wife on our 20th anniveraary up and around Scotland
anyone got any tips on where to go and stop on route would like to stop at Loch Lommand but then up West coast and over to East coast got 7 days to have a play, cheers BIG AL

Applecross a must in my opinion. I enjoyed the A832 a lot, but found the trip further north via Ullapool a bit tedious with single track/passing places. Some nice roads and places to stay eastward near Braemar/Ballater

I say Plockton is worth a visit stunning little village and the Plockton Inn great place for a nice meal .

Head up to Loch Lomond, turn west to Inveraray - and head up the west coast all the way up to Kyle.

Do a tour of Skye, back onto the mainland and head towards Applecross and on to Ullapool.

Keep going north to Kylesku, round the top - and back down by Altnaharra, Lairg, Bonar Bridge and Inverness.

Down Loch Ness-side, down to Fort William, and down through Glencoe to Tyndrum.

If you've run out of time by then - head south. If not - head up towards braemar?

I go up most years and we had full week last year - first night in Dunoon (should have gone to Inverary), two nights in Mull, two nights in Ullapool and two in Ballachulish. The ride photos are here http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=287244

My favourite places for overnights are Plockton, Locharron, Gairloch and Ullapool. Also consider heading back over the Grampians from Inverness to Perth via the A939 and A93 - fantastic riding oner the Lecht road

Ullapool is lovely, stay at the royal hotel, often thought of taking the wife there but much more fun in the twisties with a bunch of biking palls. Thumbs up for all of the west coast though, although not sure I'll bother with Applecross again, I probably expected too much after all the build up. Love the road along loch Ness , in fact loads of nice roads in east as well, braemar, ballater etc. Hope you get good weather.

Agree with all of the above, but I've always tried to stay as close to the west coast in my trips up around Scotland. A good addition is to cross the small ferry at Coran - Argour and head west (great road and run) , then at Salen(hotel is good place to stop for lunch) head for Mallaig and get the ferry to Skye there. Run through Skye if time allows or just up back over the bridge then on to Plockton. Rest as above.............

I was about to book a room at the George for my wifes birthday on 16th September (we're in Perth on 14th and Plockton on 15th ) - thanks for the recommendation

I would concur with the Plockton Inn for food although we usually stay in a nearby bunkhouse so I can’t comment on the accommodation.

If you can work it into your route then a night at http://www.smiddyhouse.co.uk is well worth it. Just make sure you book a table for dinner. Russells Bistro is exquisite. The downside is that Spean Bridge does not have a lot in it if you were looking for something to do.

For roads, as usual, the Bealach-na-baa to Applecross for its views but also the coast road from/to Applecross is also spectacular.

Another must would be http://www.skyeferry.co.uk/ at Glen Elg, apart from being one of the last turntable ferries the roads in and out are breathtaking. If you’re lucky the sea otters come out to play.

Just remember the farther north you go the less choice you have for roads to take so you probably won’t miss out, stick to the coast if possible on the west and north.

All of the above is dependent on the weather being good so you can see it.

Superior room is spot on. We once got a free upgrade to one of the mahoosive rooms though. Flasher than a flash thing.

May be a bit off the beaten track, but there are some great routes around the Lochgilphead area. I work over there quite a bit and normally take the scenic route out of Lochgilphead up the 816 to Oban then on whatever route takes my fancy back to Inverness.

The run south down through Tarbert to Campbeltown is not bad, then running back along the B842. It's a bit remote though, apart from the odd German .... normally on a GS, with lace up leather jeans
