I've often wondered about Scottoilers and just how good they are. Alas I've never had a chain-driven bike upon which I do sufficient miles (Well not for some years at any rate) to justify it.

So it was with a little trepidation that I ordered one for the Street-Triple. Particularly as I planned on fitting it myself. Still, it must be do-able I thought.

When I trotted into my local Triumph dealer last Friday to discuss an unrelated matter I mentioned that I was going to fit said oiler and asked for any advice. After much sucking of teeth I was told not to fit it under any circumstances. Rough-running was cited as the main reason, I assume because it uses a tap-off from the induction system to operate...

Anyway, despite their predictions of doom and gloom I've fitted it and went for a ride yesterday. Apart from needing to be turned down a bit, all seems to be fine.

Has anyone else had similar experiences? I'm left wondering what all the fuss is about on the dealer's part. Surely if the seal on the vacuum take-off (On the ST it's simply removing a bung and placing the rubber/plastic elbow piece over the tube) is fine then one shouldn't have any issues/

Or am I missing something here? :augie

If I recall correctly the Scottoiler only needs 3cc of air to operate the pump so I fail to see how it could induce your bike to run poorly. Perhaps the dealer was trying to put you off doing it yourself in the hope that you would have him do it?

My thoughts at the time. I mean once the valve is open then surely it doesn't need anything else from the induction system.

I simply thought that I might be missing something...

Its just chinese whispers mate, a properly fitted scottoiler is briallant. But of course you only ever hear about them when someone is slagging them off.

They work a treat. I havent had to adjust the chain on the DL650 in 6000 miles! its still within tolerance!

Only thing is, if the flow rates wrong because the ambient temp has increased etc, you can get a bit of shit on your chainguard, but easily wiped off. And much better than frickin chain lube all over the place.

Ill be fitting another on my next bike. Im going to try that chain runner block system.

I had the same on me new mk1 tiger in 06, triumph said they did not work on triumphs, to b fair it was a bit of hit an miss on the 955 engine. Me 1050 Tiger has one and it works fine so does the one on me 660 Tenere. Fantasic bits of kit and as Vilguy says no chain adjustment for thousands of miles. Had one on my ZX9B4 from new in 97 and adjusted the chain 3 times in 4 years. :thumb2

Just back from France/Switzerland/Italy/Germany/Holland on my Varadero. 2305 miles.

Before I left I filled the Scottoiler and Scottoil Lube Tube and en route refilled the Scottoiler itself twice. Result was a nice clean lightly oiled chain and no mess. Chain still doesn't need adjusted.:)

I'd like shaft drive, but not BMW's - and yes, I've had one! So at the moment the Scottoiler's the best option (for me). Others I'm sure would rather stick pins in their eyes.:augie

Only replied because up Zundapp. How many of them do you have (if any)
I have seven in various states of (dis)repair.

P.S. I found Scottoilers are a great way of stopping my perspex rear number plate rusting!

Myke

I've got a scottoiler on my Varadero. Had it fitted when I bought the bike and have only needed to adjust the chain once in 12k miles, and that was when I had the rear tyre replaced.

Quality bit of kit :thumb2

Wouldn't run a chain drive bike without one.
Dealers talking pish, had Scottoiler's on five bikes and never had any issues.
Scottoiler are also one of the best for customer service.

Zundapps - of course!, & what models?

Haha - now the whole world makes sense!

Don't have any, sadly never have...:mmmm

My son lives in Germany, and round the corner from him there's an elderly guy - well more elderly than me - who has a Zundapp, dunno what model though, and a couple of vintage German Triumphs.

Due to my interest, he gave me a big repro tinplate advertising sign for Zundapp, showing probably a 1930's boxer twin with a flying-hatted brown leather-clad rider with his lady on pillion and the legend "erschliesst Dir die Welt". Means something like 'the key to the world' or ' unlock the world'.

This is on the wall in front of my PC, hence the user name.:)

I have scotoiler on my 2005 Tiger 955i and I did have problems with it.

I bought the bike end of 2007 with 9000 miles on it and the previous owner had fitted it, or had it fitted. After a couple of days of owning the bike each time I started it up from cold it would tick-over ok and as soon as I blipped the throttle the tick-over dropped to 500rpm and the bike cut out. Did this everytime and also when hot I had to keep the throttle open slightly to keep the revs up.

I took it back and the Triumph dealer had a look and said it was the way the vacuum pipe had been attached and that he had moved its position and not had problem since! I did think of removing the scotoiler but have decided to leave it on for now.

I have read a lot of posts re the pro's and con's of having one and lots of comments stating modern 'o' ring chains don't really need oiling as they are sealed anyway but it certainly seems to be helping the chain. 15,000 miles now and still fine :D
