Hi all,

I've wanted to install a Scotts stabiliser to help during sandraiders. There was a US company which made a top yoke and bracket for that but which has ceased trading.

So I ordered a scotts stabiliser. The problem was then to make it fit to the top yoke so I ordered a mount from from BRP based on their recommendation. Through another forum user, I found someone on ebay who makes custom top yokes. So I sent him my own yoke as well as the BRP mount and a sketch I made with the dimensions needed. He measured everything and came up with this...

From there, we got this...

and the finished item...

I fitted it back on the bike and it fitted perfectly. Not much space but it doesn't touch the tank.

Next, I needed to fit the pin and it's a bit difficult to make a bracket work because the headstock is slanted and it would not get tight. That said, it was done by the defunct company so maybe there is a solution.

I went the route of my friendly local fabricator.

Not bad I think.

Again, not much space but the tank is clear. I will paint it black so it'll look finished.

All in, quite expensive (about £1k total) and I hope I will feel the difference in the sand!!

Very very nice job. I like that a lot lot! I have a Scotts damper on my 350EXC and it’s astounding the difference it makes in sand, it’s also good on big rocks too. Good investment👍

That's fantastic.
I bought a random top yoke from Mikey ages ago and eventually discovered that it had been made by the US company you reference (Henderson Precision??). They still have a website but it's orientated towards Indian motorcycles not BMW and, in any event, no response to emails. They also had a presence on ADVRider but haven't been on in a while and, again, don't respond to messages. I guess they've ceased trading. So good work on persevering with this. I might have to revisit my plan to fit a Scotts damper to my r100rg/s ...

One thing worth checking with the installation is that the bars will turn lock to lock and contact the stops on the frame and NOT be stopping due to hitting the limit of travel of the damper. On my EXC I found that on one side the damper was stopping the bars travelling before they hit the frame lock stops, so I had to adjust the lock stops out a bit to prevent the damper from being strained

Also make sure you put some grease on the pin so it rotates and slides up and down the slot nice and smoothly otherwise they can get quite graunchy

They're the ones, indeed still have a website but seems out of business. The handlebars mount they used were from BRP who were very helpful.

The yokes were made by Martin here https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1VHHdxZFVx/

No issues on the lock to lock, plenty of space. The damper's axle is in line with the steering centre and there is no strain or noise that I can hear or see. The fitting of the pin holder was done by eyesight but we used a nylon tie and a small spacer to keep parallel with the steering head tube. My welder then filled the gaps with weld. As you can see, his welding is pretty good.

Lovely job, I should have fitted one to my special, too late now though. Are you doing sand raiders again this year?

I am indeed, that's why I went through all this trouble!
Nice one. I’ve looked at doing sandraiders but I’m not sure if I’m fit enough. I’m off to Morocco on my GS Basic in November though, so if that goes OK I might give it a go in2026
