Screen adjuster bolts tip

These rascals:

One of mine fell out yesterday. Replacement parts (Bolt, bush and "nut") cost £10.

The replacement bolt is longer than the original and newer bikes seem to have another nut on the end of the bolt.

So I put a stainless nyloc nut on the end of the bolt....

....just enough to "loc".

This doesn't stop you adjusting the screen, but should stop £10 worth of parts bouncing down the outside lane of the motorway....again.

The existing and smaller old bolt on the other side still has enough thread to do the same.

Hope you can see what I mean from the picture.

The fact that the dealer had all the parts in stock suggests it happens regularly.

Dealer says domed nuts didn't go on 'til 05/06 models....

I had one of mine replaced when I got the bike a couple of weeks ago....The dealer put one on the 'new' side, but didn't bother on the other side....cheap b'stard....

Well maybe it's a geographical thing then?

The bike that was dismantled to check was an 05 without the nuts.

Anyway it's worth doing the mod if your bike is like mine and hasn't got the newer bits on.

Domed nuts

Have just come across this thread; I think that the domed nuts have ALWAYS been standard on both GS and GSA. On the GSA the screw is longer to allow the domed nuts to go on so if you convert from GS screen to GSA screen it is better to obtain the longer screws; here, in Fance, and I expect in most places, the bike arrives at the dealers in a crate and the screen is mounted by jis mechanics. That no doubt accountsfor the missing domed nuts in some cases. When fitting they are easy to drop - and very difficult to find.

I can confirm Brian's last comment, as I had to almost dismantle the bike to find a nut that went 'dink! dink!' without it landing on the garage floor a few weeks ago.

FWIW, my 12/'07 bike has the domed nuts.
Screen fastenings are checked when screen is cleaned, never had a prob.

This thread reminded me that when I had my first 1200GS in 2004 I was always fiddling around and re-tighteIing the adjusting screws and it was difficult to stop the screen rattling. Eventuelly I solved it by wedging in a small piece of rubber under the front attachments (and stuck on a union jack sticker tospongey hide it.) As far as I can see there are no changes on my 2008 model but I have had no problem at all. Is it possible that the screen is now slightly more rigid? The part number is 46.63 - 668 783

No, the screen is not more rigid. AFAIK the plastic bolts that fixed the screen at front were replaced by metal ones, perhaps with less play. Seems to have cured the problem.
