Well, it’s been a month since acquiring my new bike, and overall I’m very pleased, a mute point is that the bond one wishes to attain with a machine which I’ve learned over the years (excuse me if I’m stating the obvious) is that much criticism can often be placed firmly in the lap of the rider, rather than with the minutiae of the machine, I hasten to add that in this respect I am no exception.

I think we’ve all become bored historically with many journo’s highlighting BMW indicators frazzling their brains Ad nauseam, I was somewhat concerned what some were saying about the quick-shifter, and yes, there is a knack to getting the best out of it; I have a great sense of satisfaction that I’ve now achieved this.

And, isn’t it that why we ride, in addition to the ‘Dopamine Rush’ the sheer challenge of getting the best out of our bike, and that I submit is the real challenge to attain a mindset that works in harmony with the machine, on your path towards motorcycling Nirvana and contentment..I have been guilty of trying to ride many bikes like they are not intended, Father forgive me I’ve long been weak, a slave to the Red Mist (have the metal in my leg to prove it) I’m much better nowadays, but I take it a day at a time.👍

So, I’m getting great pleasure from my R1250 but feel a smallish windscreen would be in order, any recommendations would be appreciated, my criteria is that I would accept less than wind protection perfect to not spoil the look of the bike, and want to avoid the online suggestions that some screens actually make matters worse for the rider.

It certainly needs something in that the very exposed TFT screen and area between the bars, was full of flys when dry, and mud when raining..Thanks in anticipation..👌

I've got a Puig screen on my 1200R which I'm not unhappy with. It's as rigid as a tight thing. It's quite tall. I'm sure Puig have something similar for the 1250R.

If I ever upgraded to a 1250R, which I'm tempted to do, I'd go for the same screen.

My problem with a 1250R is another BMW where the paint falls off the engine. Quite shocking how bad it's been.

Thanks for your input, I did see a screen having two options from a German company which looked interesting. A one piece screen, not too large, and the same screen with a built-in strip air flip device, similar to those you can buy and clamp to the top edge of the screen.

I messaged the company asking a question about fitting, and received a reply in broken English stating it required a certain fitting kit from either BMW or Wunderlich, and tbh I lost a bit of interest at that point, so might just go for the eBay Puig..🙄

Slightly concerned regarding your experience of issues with the engine finish, I had some trouble years ago and hoped BMW had improved this issue, mine has only covered 1k miles so early days..🤞

Anyone know if the MRA vario (or other screens) from the pre-2023 R1250R fits the latest '24 model? I've got the mounts from the sport screen. Google is failing me for an answer!

Myself and a mate who has the same bike, have had very little issues with our RS bikes on engine finish. The only place mine has some slight paint loss is right underneath the sump area where all the road muck gets thrown up. Most do see paint worn off and some corrosion underneath if you look there on bikes more than a few years old. I cleaned it off and applied a good few coats of Lanoguard there and there's been no corrosion since I did this a year ago, that includes riding over winter. Everywhere else, it's factory mint for a 2018 bike. I looked at a not so old Suzzuki GSX1000 GT recently and I can tell you that the beemer is MUCH better finished. That big Suzi hadn't faired very well for a bike less than a year old.

Thanks for your reply, very reassuring information, after having a 1200GSA Twin Cam which I loved, however, there were corrosion issues, which was a constant concern the longer I kept the bike, obviously getting progressively worse.
The hubs, especially around the spoke heads, and the alternator cover again especially around the fixing, plus other areas which look like alloy but are painted.
I complained to the dealer, but got no satisfaction in the end, BMW even stating I’d cleaned the bike with non-approved products; I considered contacting ’Muc Off’ as they quoted it too chemically abrasive to paintwork.. :nenau
I bought my bike with 450 miles on the clock and have now done 3,075 as of this morning, and enjoying the experience, although the small Puig screen is meh, but got it here in the FSW section at a reasonable price, and at least it keeps the flys and detritus off the TFT and top yoke areas..👍

I'd just advise keeping it cleaned regularly. Avoid any aggressive cleaners and don't trust Muc Off which I never use. I use a ph neutral car shampoo after a quick but gentle blast with the pressure washer turned down a little to get the worst off, then hand clean with a fleece mitt and ph neutral shampoo, then dry it off. For nooks and crannies, I use a pet dryer on the warm setting and this blasts all the water from where you don't wanting it sitting around to long. The ACF 50 comes out and I spray it on quite liberally everywhere bar tyres, brake disks and tank/seat/instruments/screen & headlamp. I leave it to migrate a little then wipe the excess off. During winter, this gets done at least weekly with regular riding. The lower fairing panels come off and I clean off the underside and once every 6 months I apply a coat of Lanoguard with a paint brush and after wiping off excess, leave it overnight before use. Seems a lot of work, but you take care of your "R" this way and it'll still look new five years down the line. Even the chrome exhaust looks factory fresh on mine. I'd also advise servicing the flapper valve twice annually (I have another thread on this if you search under the RS sub forum). Had zero issues.

Sorry, it's an RS. But I'm very biased after 9 years and 50K miles.

I did own an R1200 for a short time before the RS, but never got round to adding a screen.

As you can see, my detailed research into screens resulted in a cut down OEM screen, so my own experience suggests a short, wide screen may give you a comfortable ride. Rather than a barn door.

Honestly, for me the original screen in upper position gave me a huge amount of noise. The lower screen lets the breeze hit my torso instead of my helmet.

We're all different shapes so we have to find our own answer.

From no screen at all, I'd work upwards not downwards in the search for your own Nirvana.

Just had a reply from MRA. The older screen does not fit the 23-onward model. They have no plans to make one.
