ok - finally had enough of the standard screen. I've tobernators fitted, but sitting at 80mph the wind noise is absolutley screaming (and yes, i've ear plugs with a well fitted full face lid). Also, i start getting a bit of a weave on the bike which I'm inclinded to think is due to the screen flexing, but i may be mistaken. I'll be doing a quick run through France in a couple of weeks and this is pissing me off when i do 10 miles of A3, so it'll drive me round the bend with a few hundred miles of A roads and motorways.

So, new screen time.

I'm not really taken by the huge plastic things from secdem or Cee Bailey, and my 1150 screen (with tobernators) did the job without being the size of a barn door attached to the front of the bike.

The MRA Vario's look ok, but they come in two flavours: "Vario Screen" and "Sports Touring Vario Screen"

Anybody know the difference? Any opinions?

FWIW I'm 6 ft, have the seat on high and tend to sit / lean quite far forward - if you also fit that description and have a solution, then let me know :)

cheers

I'm a similar height to you and have no problems with the standard screen and tobinators. I found the trick is to have the screen as low and as flat as possible (in a sportsbike stylee). So drop the screen down to its lowest setting on the and lift up the tobinators. You can't do it too far, or you restrict the bars too much.

This will put your head into the airflow, but out of the turbulance. If you have a good lid and plugs, it should now be OK.

I went for a barn door screen and sold it quite soon after. Cut out the wind alright, but looked terrible - you also had to look through the screen which I didn't like.

Cookie, I am 6ft and have fiited the taller screen from Nippy Normans, all sorted now, I'm in north surrey if you want to have a look at one fitted. :

thanks - Ok, I'll give it one more go on the setting you suggest and i see how i get on, although i think i've had the damn thing on every setting known to man :)

Chris, if it alls goes wrong tomorrow I may well give you a shout to have a look - I'm in Thames Ditton, so just round the corner.

I was given an R1200ST as a courtesy bike today while the GS was in at Vines. It was horrible to turn and skipped badly over ruts in the road; but on the A3 at 90 (miles per day officer) cruise it was silence and stability compared with the GS...

Hi Cookie.

I'm with GSmonkey.
I'm not as tall as you guys and have no probs with the standard screen.

However I also ride a 1300 pan europian and I find that the faster I go the lower I need the put the screen.
Alowing for more air flow around my head with the screen keeping it off my boudy.

I'm interested in an MRA screen also. It seems to me, looking at the photos of the Vario and the Touring that they are the same screen - but the Vario has the added aerofoil :mmmm

i think unfortunatly size does matter have a look at this link
i have made my own version of it and the results are fantastic i spent hours testing it for the optimun airflow when positioned right the air flow on the inner screen climbs at 90 degrees way over your head and you are left in a oasis of calm
even at 120 plus no buffeting whatsoever
i used some long strands of paper and a hairdryer to test the lip position before road testing by attaching with duck tape and then finally fixing
bear in mind but i dont care what the screen looks like a case of function over form id rather be comfy and enjoymyself than worry what other people think but the end result is staggering ..que jokes
the one on this site looks quite good http://www.laminarlip.com/ it is where my inspiration comes from ..i dont think you will get what you want from a screen as small as the original but this lip thing definatly has somthing going for it

Hey... I'm planning on doing this...

I've bought some 5mm acrylic and I intend on heating and shaping it to something like the Laminar Lip. I've bought some 3M disklock to attach it with even...

As you've finished yours and presumably tested it in crosswinds and such...

Do you wish you had the little "wings" on yours now? How tall are you? and can you hear the engine at motorway speeds now?

to be honest i was drinking lots of whisky one night and and saw me old helmet no puns please ..hung up on the garage wall and thought that visor
would do as one of those lip things and so we progressed from there
its no big deal to try one of those vario screen wingy thing other than of course cost ..the only real risk in this case was four 4m holes in the screen

im 6ft 1 and the screen is a cee bailey but even with my amuturish efforts the results are really really good it somehow smothes out the airflow

under normall riding ie no gail force side winds you couldnt askfor better
sounds laike you have a more profesional approach than
me let me know how you get onand post some photoes but the paper strands and hairdryer trick gives you a good starting point for testing
good luck

MRA SCREENS

The Vario and Touring Vario are totally different.

On the Vario the entire top half of the screen is adjustable up and down, where as on the Touring it is more of an ajustable extension.

Type in MRA on Google and go to HPS for pictures.

I've got the Vario on mine and think it looks good and does an excellent job. Having said that I found the standard screen to be OK as well.
