Screens - Yes I know

Sorry folks this is almost as bad as a what oil question.

Looking at the MANY threads on aftermarket screens I am even more confused than before

Basically the standard 2012 GS screen throws all the air onto the pillions helmet and at anything above 55 its rag doll time.

In terms of options we appear to have:

The GSA screen and wiglets, this apears to be the favoured option but its silly money
The Givi airflow gets a great write up from some but not from others and its performance at 75 MPH from a number of posts apears to be poor.

Is there anything I have missed and do you agree its worth paying the extra for the GSA screen

Well I'm 6'2" and have the GIVI screen, I have it set around half way and I can ride where permitted 80-85mph with my visor or chin guard up no problem.

If I need more air on a hot day just drop the screen a few mm and you get more draft.

Very good bit of kit , possible the best aftermarket mod I bought for my GS

I think you'll find (as I did) that, unless you completely remove the screen, changing the angle of the wind at the top of the screen is the answer. I had also tried several screens including the Airflow and in the end all I needed was a lip - got the MRA from the Adventure Bike Shop, it's brilliant and massively adjustable:

"Yep me too!!!" The MRA is fully adjustable and I poodle along happily at 70mph officer! With open face lid and the wife too. I'm 6.2 have to pop your head out to the side to get some cool air

I made my own. Couple of screens off ebay, cut the top off one, and some bolts and things. I did take some time to make it presentable.
Low position gets some draught
Mid position, i get an airwash that blows the rain off visor and high, it all goes quiet, as post above.
I did notice that the screen vibrates a bit with the extra weight, guess the same whatever you put onto it, so i put a support in.
About £35 all together. I used some nice SS flanged bolts, good for astetics.

Try Slipscreens on e-Bay. They are based in Hampshire and the tinted screen I bought for my GSA is superb quality, and fits just the same as the original one. Pretty sure they do alternatives to the std height/width as well.

The Givi set high at the back though further away from rider works better than set low at the back.

In smooth air it's great, but it can't smooth out air turbulence caused by motorway traffic. TBH I doubt anything other than a car windscreen would fully solve that issue.

+1 for the Airflow.

I ride with a Shoei Hornet (peaked) and I'm 5' 10'' in height. Excellent performance at 70+. Properly adjusted I can put my hand on the top of my helmet at 80+, lift my hand up 3 inches until I feel the turbulent air well clear of my helmet. So much more quieter too. I ride standard and previously bought the Adventure Screen off e-bay and found it bloody awful - noisy and turbulent whatever the setting. Didn't want to piss about with winglets and spoilers and all that crap (it's a bike not an aeroplane) took a punt on an Airflow (£130.00) and would never look back !!

I got rid of my GSA screen (bike is a GSA to start with) and got the airflow and can't fault it at all

No problems at all at high speed, no wind and noise!
With the added feature of lowering and adjusting for town riding it keeps you cool at slow speeds if you wish

I didn't see the sense in spending £90 on a clip on lip when for the extra £30 the Airflow is better IMHO and you can sell your old screen to people looking for one for their GS and it ends up not a costly mod

Of course you can always keep your original screen for when you go to sell the bike and sell the airflow separate as there will be plenty of bods looking to buy it

Airflow works brilliantly but is fugly and I found claustrophobic in a normal helmet due to much reduced erm .... air flow. I was very happy when I used an Open Face helmet.

If you want good looks - stay with standard.

Looks like its the Givi or the lip

Oh yes the Givi really is an ugly piece of kit but lets be honest the GS is not the bonniest bike, but boy is it capable

TBH I don't think the Givi is any more fugly than the OEM GSA barn door.

Saying that, run the bike without its bodywork and Givi looks positively gorgeous.
