Just from reading vixen's thread I was wondering about what's the best screen to get.
I read about a lot of people saying they bought the Wunderlich Ergo - especially on the US forums but they say they actually aren't that good at deflecting the wind - what good are they so?

What are ye're opinions?

Can you get the screens tinted yorself?

Whilst this thread is on can anyone suggest a screen or ideally an extender for a 1100?

I've got the Wunderlich screen in the shorter of the two heights on my 54 plate F650GS. Whilst it isn't perfect and there is still some wind noise and buffeting it is still a massive improvement over the standard screen. With a standard screen and a peaked helmet I found it almost impossible to look sideways at any speed without feeling my head was going to be ripped off. I travelled 3000 miles aound Scandinavia last July which I'm sure would have been unbearable without it. Perhaps the taller varient would be better, but I guess I'll never know.
Not sure about the tinting.

I dont know about the cheapest place but I think most of the BMW dealers can get Wunderlich. I looked for a while and in the end bought mine from Clarks in Birmingham. I noticed the last time I was on the Nippy Normans site that they sell some Wunderlich, perhaps worth asking them.

I dont know the price of a Wunderlich screen but have a look at Busters website for what appears to be an identical screen - only much cheaper.I have one from Busters on my twin spark gs( 4 hole mounting ) and its a lot better than the standard BMW Dakar screen.

I saw the busters one alright - a lot cheaper but I'm fairly tall and was thinking the larger wunderlich would be better.
That's not to say the busters one isn't as big but since they don't give measurements I don't know.

http://www.bmwbikebits.co.uk/ have the wunderlich but they're looking for £52 to ship it to Ireland

I have just done a Goolge search and these people came up as dealers for Wunderlich in Ireland 'Jimmy's Place' Knocknahoo Gorteen Co. Sligo IRELAND +353 (0) 71 9182464 they may not be near you but the carriage must be cheaper than from England. Dont any of the BMW dealers in Ireland sell Wunderlich?

If I were a gambling man I would go for the first on the list. Seem to live in welsh Wales though.

I've ordered a Vario Screen for the 1100 - John at Jaws has kindly sorted me.:thumb

I came accross them before mikestatt - to be honest I never bother with Irish dealers as it's usually a load of hassle - way more expensive and they mess about too much with shipping.
Local BMW dealer can't seem to order their own gear let alone another company's

I bought the Wunderlich screen from Jimmys place in Sligo. He was very easy to deal with. Delivered on time and price was good.
I got the lower screen and I find it brilliant. Compared to the original dakar screen which just blows all the wind directly at your head, the wunderlich screen really reduces wind. I wear a tourx with the peak, and I dont have any issues at motorway speeds with wind on the peak.

The only issue I found with the screen is at higher speeds it tends to buffet a bit. Maybe it was because I had the back of the bike fully loaded, but at around 130Kph to 140kph I could get a wobble in the steering, which I "think" was due to the screen.

If you're ordering the screen, theres different mounting configurations for the older 650s before 2004.

Also they make a slightly different one if you are using handguards. At full lock the normal screen would hit off the handguards if you have them. Just something to bear in mind if you plan on getting handguards eventualy.

Hi, Glencoeman, did you get the 3" taller flip up or standard?? (Busters screen)

I'm 5 8" ride with peak and non peaked lids so would like to know what your thoughts are I have looked at the Wunder screen and wunder why it costs so much! (my little joke)..
also note that many talk about buffeting from it and at speeds around 70mph and above a weave/wobble? How does yours behave?

I have a teller dakar with a modification (by me) it works o.k but looks hideous! basically I'm using the standard screen as a vario style flip up its attached with brakets half way along the screen, which are adjustable (with screw driver)

thanks

Thanks for the info Dakar Gal - I'll give him a ring so.

The fastest I can get out of my Dakar is just over 70mph - it's restricted - so no worries of wobbles

Corkonian, how did you get on with the screen? Did the fella in Sligo get it for you, and how many bobs was it?
Is it any good?

Ive just fitted an Ergo screen to my bike, seems really good, its added 10 mph to my cruise speed, cut out a lot of noise and is perfecly stable, ( 6 bolt fixing helps ) in fact its better in cross wind than the daker screen it replaced. The down side is its very expensive, took ages to get, comes with steel bolts instead of stainless and without edge trim. I got the lower one as Im 5ft 1 and with handle bar risers its only just high enough. sue

Thanks for the feedback Sue.
Im less than convinced that Wunderlich make the best replacement screen for the 650. Im 6ft 5 so will need the taller one.
Ill keep looking til someone convinces me.

If I find one that works Ill certainly post feedback.
