I am looking to visit Norway before school holidays this year June/July so that we can get hytte accommodation easily while travelling. I am wondering what sea travel options anyone has used (including non commercial ferries) to get to the south of norway (ideally Christiansand).

I've been looking at Norway myself this year or next. The only direct sailing is on a freight boat from Immingham (near Hull) to Brevik (south of Oslo). This goes only twice per week, takes well over 24 hours and when I got a quote for just me and the bike, cost over £500 (I think it was £512 - meals included). With all the freight sailings they can change your sailing at short notice as priority is of course given to freight:

As on the above page there are more frequent freight sailings to Esbjerg and Gothenburg from Immingham. I haven't looked at the prices for freight boats to Esbjerg (from Immingham or Harwich) but I believe the Gothenburg ship is a similar cost to Brevik.

On a passenger ferry you can sail from Harwich to Esbjerg in Denmark (around £350 return for bike and rider, cabin included). You can then get a sailing from Hirtshals in the far north of Denmark to Norway - these are frequent and not too costly.

The other option I have considered is to sail to the Netherlands and either ride up through Denmark to Hirtshals, or to Kiel (northern Germany) where sailings go to either Norway or Gothenburg (Gothenburg sailing much cheaper via Stenaline).

I've still not booked though - waiting to see what happens with my work situation before spending out. Hope that's of some help!

I sailed with DFDS last September and although the price was steep, £400 + I thought they were great. Food was great and the best thing was I was able to leave my return ticket open, so if your plans are likely to change you can just book your return when it suits you. If they have a place that is.
Good luck.

Harwich to Esbjerg
Small world I have just been checking this out today it is not cheap but for 2 bikes a cabin return was £684 for one bike and rider was £527
I looked at the costs for to get to copenhagen riding and the sums were
from UK southcoast to copenhagen 964 miles each way fuel cost around £300 hotel say £60 tunnel crossing say £60 total of £420 single rider

so for two bikes shared cabin then it is a good saving on riding up

Cheers
Eddie

Did an early June Norway trip last year via harwich - Esberg

All good and would love to be doing the same this year.

Beware Scandinavian school holidays start mid June, makes it a lot busier.

The time and cost sounds similar to the old DFDS service from Newcastle to Stavanger.

If you want to go to Denmark and the corner of Sweden then fine, but if you want to do Norway make it as direct as you can there and back. It's a fabulous country and I'd recommend you spend as much time there as you can!:D

The only country I've ever been to where I've taken more alcohol into it than I brought home!!:blast

DFDS Torsline discount codes for Immingham to Brevik

Does anyone know of any discount codes for the Immingham-Brevik ferry please. Be nice to save a few bob before i book if at all possible. Thanks :)

We landed Esbjerg at around 13:00 and easily made the Hirstals-Kristiansand ferry for about 18:00 with 1 petrol/food stop.
