Hi everyone

really looking forward to going to Norway this year
so today i started to cost it

Harwich to Esbjerg inc breakfast and dinner return last 3 weeks in July
£808.00

Hirtshals to Kristiansand
a little 3 and half hour crossing :nenau
£217.00 if you take the early crossing
£270.00 if you take the later crossing

WTF over a grand just to get there and back ?????

anyone know a cheaper way to get there

thanks Gaz

You could take your bike through Denmark, Sweden (the bridge between København and Malmø) and into Norway. More driving but cheaper I guess.

drive it up it'll take 2 days

calais up to northern germany stay in rendsburg visit the viking museum in Schleswig, bang it up over border in danemark, the bridge... and your away....

Hotel Zur Post in Rendsburg is nice, take the schwebe bruecke have a nice fish meal down the North Sea/ Baltic Canal or stay in Schleswig near the old mental home....

or Flensburg right on the Danish border...

that's nice too funny little castle to have a look at there...

which is not open on a monday...:blast

If you want to go direct to Norway you can go Freight from Immingham to Brevik for £450 return plus £25 booking fee this is under DFDS freight service I have the number somewhere will look it out and post later.

Cheers Bob

Depending on where you're coming from, you could do Newcastle - Amsterdam which is cheaper (lots). It'll add an extra day each way.

So how's that work? Obviously, you don't sit in a crate with your bike for a couple of days, so what happens?

I did a quick search on the Harwich to Esjberg ferry: dept 7th july and returning the 28th: 1 Adult with a M/C, 2 berth cabin and no meals (take your own sandwiches rather than pay for expensive meals) and the price came out at £572

Its 700 miles-ish from Calais to Esjberg which can be ridden in about 15hrs and will cost about £70 in petrol plus £25-ish for the ferry across the channel. Crossing Dk and riding up to Norway is another long day's ride.

The downside is by the time you pay for accommodation and tyre wear etc you wont save much over the ferrys and (if you want to cover ground on the main roads) it's a really boring ride with little to see until you are 100 miles into Norway.

Edit.

If you do ride up you wouldn't go Esjberg but turn east at Kolding which knocks 60 miles off the trip. The last time I rode back from Denmark in July it didn't stop raining until the M5 which wasn't much fun and might also be a consideration.

Hi Slowdown,

Sit in crates? depends how bad you have been. For £450 you get a cabin and fed as well (same as the truckers) its a 24 hour crossing but the bad news is it sails at 04:00 in the morning on a Thursday and coming back from Brevik it sails at 03:00 in the morning on a Friday in the morning and the sailings are not as frequent as the Immingham to Gothenburg route which you can also book. If anyone's interested the booking number is 01469 552635. I don't know what time you board or if you can get on board the night before but if we go for this option I will post here with more details. I am planning mid June for a trip.

thanks

Norway

Hi Gaz

Dont want to piss you off but 2 off us are going the end of May / June :
Travel by road up through Germany into Denmark across into Sweden then into Norway.

On the way back Ferry from Kristiansand to Hirtshals 80euros each one way .....then from Esbjerg - Harwich and cabin seaveiw + Bikes £124 ( booked with DFDS)

total ferries £124 + 80 euros Each

I think the trick is to book early we book last NOV 09

You could always go next year

ferry prices

A good Mate and I are doing the Norway thing for the first time the last 2 weeks of may and have already booked the ferry from Harwich to Denmark but were intending to book the Hirtshals to Kristiansand ferry in the next couple of weeks. It seems that the prices for this ferry have now doubled:eek

So we have 3 options
1 bite the bullet and book now
2 ride up through Sweden
3 turn up at Hirtshals and hope to get a good deal on the day

Has anyone tried option 3 with success????????????????????????

The Immingham to Brevik ferry can only accommodate 24 passengers and i believe that truck drivers may have priority, check the T & C's.

GAZZABART-

We have just booked our ferry from Hirtshals to Kristiansand(for 2 riders and 2 bikes) for end of may on the Colorline for 99 euro's each return.

These are mid week sailings ( out on a tuesday morning-back on a thursday morning) so a suggestion that may save a few quid - move your travelling days around a little if you can and see what difference it makes.

Our ferry's have cost less than £330 each and thats from Harwich-esbejg ( with a cabin) and Hirtshals to Kristiansand all return tickets. I do appreciate that you are travelling in the summer months so prices will be higher than for my trip but an extra £700 quiid does seem steep..

I think it would be well worth shopping about mate and if poss juggle your travelling days to get the best deal.

This is my first trip so I am no expert on the matter though..

I think timing is everything. We're going in late May Glasgow-Harwich-Esbjerg-Copenhagen-Oslo return for £330 each (3 people)!
