bust the other evening with some e-mails and a pop up looking like the windows update said urgent update needed, i ignored this as it said it would take some time, but it didnt look kosher, carried on with my work. After i had the pop up whatecer i type into google or any other engine gets hijacked to randon seach engines that you cannot just press the back button to get rid of, have to close the page.
I tried to do a system restore, but when i choose my earlier date it wont let me proceed, now when i try the resore its says there are no resore points, i guess its blocked this feature, tried spybot, all scans come up clean, using avg freebie, i guess its got into the registry
Just not looking forward to doing a re-install fron disc again .
anyone come across this
any suggestions please

it downloaded OK but wont run,

earlier when i clicked on the link in the 'sticky' to hijack software it diverted me to e-bay

Sounds like a rootkit virus. Download Malwarebytes and install. Update it when promted if you can. Disable sytem restore, reboot pressing F8 and start in safe mode. Run malwarebytes 'full scan'. Allow it to delete whatever it finds. Reboot and repeat. When it's clean reboot in normal mode and enable system restore.

If it's clever enough to not let you install Malwarebytes then you can try the Trend Micro online scanner first - here.

Had one of these a few weeks ago and it was a right pain to get rid of. Good luck.
