Hi, off for a weeks trip soon.
want to leave pannies at home for a more sleeker looking bike, daft i know.
was going to take my top box and a rear seat bag.
which is the biggest/best bag to take.
will i have enough room with just this.
or am i off my tree and should i take the panniers too:)

i use the touratec one off my 1150, fits on the 1200 a treat, ive seen tank bags on the back seat to that works ok.

Check out the Ventura system. Started using mine on my old bike in '02, top piece of kit!

Your original concern was whether the panniers would hinder your progress around the hairpins of the Alps. The answer is, no they will not.

Will a top box and bag on the back be large enough? Depending only on how many hair dryers and slingbacks you need to take, then yes, definitely. A friend of mine tours without a tankbag, top box or panniers. Just a 900cc Hornet and a small tail pack, usually covered by a Tesco carrier bag.

Pack all your clothes, then un-pack lobbing half of them away. Repeat as necessary. You will probably not be meeting royalty, after all.

Wear clothes that can double up. A lightweight fleece can be worn in the evening or slipped under a jacket if it gets cold. Invest in some decent mid-layer T-shirts / tops from say Cotswold (15% discount); not the cheapest stuff but it lasts for years and dries very quickly. Need to wash it? Easy, stand on it and kick it around n the shower, then hang it out... 99 times out of a 100% it will be dry come morning. A tiny bit damp? Don't worry, your body heat will dry it in minutes. Similarly, some lightweight trousers that strip off into shorts. A daily pair of shreddies, a few socks and a snot rag. Job done.

Any half decent town has a launderette and usually an ancient crone who will do it for you whilst you hoon about. If you really run short, a supermarket will sell you anything you might need to keep up your sartorial efforts.

Good tailpack? The TT one. Expands up and down, sits on the rear seat.

PS Your vast Nike trainers will probably take up 50% of the space you need. Bin 'em.
