Help!! 2008 F650GS (800cc) Twin.

I have removed the air box to replace spark plugs. On removal found that one of the connecting rubbers from throttle body to air box had been crimped when last assembled. (Thanks to BMW Dealer who fuxed a top-end oil leak!). I have now bought new rubber gromments and relevant clips but in order to fit them it looks like I need to remove the seat lock assembly which is in the way. I have removed the two nuts on top that appear to hold it but still does not want to come off. Any ideas please?

Oh, and when BMW replaced these they used cable ties (as can be seen in the pic) and not the correct clamps. Also only clamped one end!

They are not clamped at upper end. Is push fit onto throttle bodies when fitting air box. Needs careful alignment which clearly dealer did not account for!

Thanks Seahorse. I have been supplied with two metal clamps - one for the top (air box end) which is thinner than the bottom (TB end.). When the deaer replaced they only cable-tied the upper end!!
Any clues re removing the seat lock assembly to get better access?

When the air box is fitted I don't see how you could get to clamps. While since I did this, I will check.

The clamps I think will be for either end of the rubbers connecting the throttle bodies to the cylinder head. It doesn't sound as though they are needed if I understand correctly. I am assuming the throttle bodies are still in place? The throttle body to air box rubbers locate into the air box without any clamp, they have a moulded in groove which fits into the hole in the air box body. As stated above the throttle end of the rubber is simply a push fit onto the throttle body as you lower it into place. You should be able to feel it locate properly if you are careful. Realoem confirms this with regard to the clamps. I know all this very well from having to replace an ABS pump on a 650 🙄. I hope you never have to do that!

If you haven't done it already, while you have the air box off, give the idle control valve a clean. These can get dirty which screws up the idle. It's in the right side of the air box.
Also check the condition of the two rubber pipes which connect to the back underside of the air box. These are also part of the idle control system. Replace if in any doubt and be careful not to kink them when replacing the air box.

The seat lock and its associated plastic mount have tie wraps securing cables to it.
Once these are removed its a stiff tug to pull the plastic mount and seat lock off of the cross tube underneath it.
Good idea to detach the ABS cable from the plastic mounting before pulling the whole thing away from the cross tube to save breaking it.

It is easier to slide those intake boots over the throttle bodies when reinstalling the airbox if you give the mating surface a light coat of rubber friendly grease. I use dielectric grease.

Another reason to try to do maintenance yourself if possible.

Too bad BMW is trying to eliminate service by DIYers and independents by discontinuing the sale of service manuals.

Thanks for the responses. I have learned to my cost that those intake boots are not exchangeable. They are an integrated part of the whole airbox. I found this despite the dealer supplying me with two boots and clamps which turned out to be the boots/robbers that connect the throttle bodies to the engine. These look similar to the air box rubbers but definitely are not.
Now awaiting a new airbox!! Thanks Radii - I have a tube of silicone grease to help ease the rubbers over the TB. Will see hope it all turns out

The boots are available separate from the airbox. They are listed for the F800S, ST, R and GT. I have no idea why they aren't listed for the GS. There is a thread on AdvRider where a guy bought them for his GS.

Part number 13717672606.

Thanks. Very good info and I am sure it will help others. I have already got the new Airbox with integrated rubber and fitted it. So a little late for me. Fitted the bike up and it started with the lightest touch on the button and purring away again!!
Hope this thread helps others who are prepared to venture down below the air box on their K72.
