Seat removal or not....?

THEY ARE BOTH OFF! I SPENT THE BEST PART OF THE DAY- BANGING, PUSHING, YANKING, PULLING...... you get the idea......

You were right David sand was to blame but not a great deal asd you said.......just very grittr. What I did notice was that stupid rear wire is very flimsey and doesn't move properly and also more importantly is the front seems not to move the two 'hooks far back enough...........

A warranty issue I think as it is faulty.................

I recently had a similar problem, this time caused by a misrouted intercom wire which was trapped under the bar at the rear of the front seat.

I ended up admiting defeat and taking the bike in for the dealer(CWs) to have a look. Unfortunately I didn't see them actually doing it, but I did have a chat with the mechanic afterwards and I will try and explain my understanding of what he did.

The seat has a plastic base and this has some give in it. Apparently if you push down on the front of the seat it is possible to push the lugs at the front back far enough to disengage them and lift the front of the seat up. After this he lifted the front of the seat up and pulled it forward a little to ease off the straps at each end of the bar to the rear of the seat. Once he had done this he removed the seat leaving the bar in situ on the bike.

Are we talking about the standard GS as well here? I have been practicing for over three years to replace the seat in one go -but still it rarely happens; I have sanded and filed and oiled everything that comes into contact - and carefully examined all the bits to ensure they are not bent nor distorted. In the original road tests in Moto Journal in early 2004 one of the minus points was the difficulty of relocating the seat. That is why I have never bought a U-lock which fits tidyly ...under the seat!;

The front seat on my 12GS got stuck whilst I was on holiday. After much probing and wrenching, I spotted the lever on the opposite side of the seat to the key, you have to look from underneath to look inside the plastic of the rear section. I used the c spanner from my mate's tool kit to push the lever down to release the seat. It turned out to be my disk lock reminder that had moved and wasn't allowing the key to push the lever down fully.

As to re-fitting the seat, I have the seat on the higher setting and find it pretty easy as there is more room to see down the gap between the seat and the tank to check the bar is going into the slots. Hard to explain, I will try taking some pictures at the weekend.

Seat removed: If you look at how the key moves the 'key bar' across the runner when the key is turned towards the front of the bike...(anti clockwise) it then pushes the runner down and moves the two hooks back to the rear thus unclipping the hieght adjusting bar on the seat. The runner needs to be pushed down as far as possible for a smooth action otherwise the two hooks do not go back far enough... Some kind of spacer/washer is needed help this action....have I got something missing. I've just got a shiny bar sliding on a black runner........?

As for the rear seat activation- it's just a bad flimsey design that needs the locking chrme bar to be bent or the seat spike to be filed down a tad.

I noticed that the tool kit can make a big difference if you take it off the seat will go on alot easier. If you keep the tool roll in make sure its flat.
Also agree with one of the others, the Sargent seats fit much easier.
