Hi

I want to do something about my seat as i am finding it uncomfortable for long trips. I have decided to have the standard seat re worked but am reluctant to use the one on the bike in case the result is worse than i have already.
I have the chance to buy a BMW low seat but do not want a low seat being 6. 3 tall. Does anyone know if the base on the low seat is the same as the standard one, is it just less padding that makes the seat low !!

Yes it will be less padded:blast

Seats, in my order of preference

1. Corbin

2. Sargent

3. Any Wunderlich or Touratech made by Kahedo

As for aftermarket trimmers, that is very subjective - and down to you

The best seats come from the USA

FWIW I have a Corbin on order for my GSA as I can't stand more than 2 hrs on it. Took my stepson out for the 1st time a couple of days ago and he thought it was great - apart from the godawful seat.

There is a few weeks wait for it but will post on here when it arrives and has a few miles on it.

Tried having original re shaped, then an air cushion and finally a dead sheep - hopefully throwing a ridiculous amount of cash at it will solve the problem.
 
Best gel seat I had was a Melboy. That was on a blackbird, but they are listed on Jaws' site and could be worth an enquiry; Tony Archer in Huddersield has a good rep too.

My GS came with a gel set-up that looks like a Bill Meyer, but I couldn't say whether it was or not.
 
recently had gel seats fitted by tony archer. just come back from a seaside trip approx four hours each way and have got to say that the gel seat is not what it ought to be. very disappointed really. cost £120 for front and rear seats and probably would have been better off takin the cash down the pub. going to morocco in 2 weeks and a bit worried now that im gonna get a bsa!

I've always thought that......................since buying a Komfi Seat from Cooper Reading, which was just a re-style of the OEM GS seat

They are not a patch on a Corbin or a Sargent...................you pay your money and take your choice

You can't expect a gold plated comfortable seat...............for the money of brass buttons

Gel seat in Morocco? I hope the temps stay down!

I don't have a great pic of my seat, but you can see it here. I've done a tour and a couple of 400-mile days, no worries.

At £15 total spend got to be worth a punt.

Just got back from a 1000 mile mini tour around bits of Scotland with my new Putnams / sheepskin combo. I did the same trip 6 weeks ago on the standard seat and the putnams made a huge difference (and as sockpuppet says - cost buttons)
 
I have had two GS seats rebuilt and the latest had a gel inset fitted. It was fairly crap. After having a KLT seat which was perfect for me i was on a mission:D

I thought of a Corbin or Sargeant but couldn't get my head round the cost for something which had their lovers and indifferents. I bought an Airhawk from the US when the exchange rate was a bit better and got a great deal. It can go with different bikes and i like it as well. 700+ miles days are tested. On the standard seat it would have finished me!

Probably the same with the cheap ones. Cheapest one i heard of was industrial bubblewrap:D
 
Corbin arrived after a 3 month wait !
Did two rides this weekend both around 5hrs in the saddle.

First impressions.
Its quite firm, but seems to 'spread the load' much better than the standard seat. You feel sort of cradled rather than sat on.

It doesn't get less comfortable as the miles rack up, in fact if anything it gets better - complete opposite of the standard seat which had me standing on the pegs just to relieve the pain.

Early days but although it was a huge expense it has transformed the bike for me into one I will happily ride all day.

You can really feel what the tyres are doing.

I found this with a corbin, it took about a thousand miles to "bed in " but now after about another 70.000 it is fine. The original std. seat gave me a real pain in the bum riding to scotland so get rid of it, the bmw lowered seat feels like it had a lump scooped out and you sit in a little dip don't get involved how they charge so much for corbins is beyond me, but it does work.

I had my seat remade by Tony Archer.. I looked seriously at sargents before hand. but these are no good for me as they're an inch LOWER than the stock seat. I've had a Corbin in the past on a Speed Trip. it didn't really suit me. an expensive error.

Back to Tony Archer. his brief was to increase the height by 3".. and make the seat 'flatter' so I'm not forced up against the tank... with a semi-matt vinyl that I'm less likely to slide about on. The other main criteria was 'long distance comfort'. I got that alright. In the run-up to my last trip I added a putnams and a sheep pad. in the end these were used as my pillow for camping. (lovely) they didn't go back on the bike... not even for the last day when I did 846 miles. They were unecessary and added nothing. apart from more height.

one other thing.. I never mentioned a gel-pad. Nor did he offer to fit one.

cost for the seat rebuild. £80.

Just got back from doing 2200miles up to and around Scotland. Worked a treat:bounce1. Plus a lot better on those few days when its hot and sunny, as the seat stays cooler.

I didn't have that amount of time to wait for comfort. nor did i want to risk forking out over £300 for something that might not suit. thats a risk too far. I know now I made the right decision.
