Second gear problem!!

Evening all, i have a problem with second gear, a few days ago whilst in second and accelerating, it jumped out of gear and back in again, and all was well, today it did it again in the morning, by the afternoon it would not go into second, instead it made a horrible grinding noise. going down through the box it engages intermitantly then starts grinding again. the gear indicator does not show 2, it shows 3.. all other gears are perfect just 2any ideas would be appriciated. the bike is a 1995 11** with a post 1997 box. i put the box in about 2 years ago. no problemes up till now. All quiet from the forum - try a search about 1100 gearboxes - 2nd and 3rd gear problems are fairly common and there is a lot of information out there. As a first step, check all is well with the gear lever and linkage to the gear change shaft. The lever should pivot freely and the linkage should not show excessive slop.
If these are OK you will have to suspect the gearbox itself.

1997 gearbox...are they not the upgrade box ?

Yes they are. There were three: M93, M94 and M97. The latter is the least troublesome but they are not bullet-proof and they do wear.
