I was contemplating picking up an R1300GS.

I've been fishing around prices and I found I could buy (without too much effort) a 2023 with 20,000 miles for just £11,500. This was from a trader who buys trade ins from dealers - So you can presume this is a PCP swap. And the poor sod who traded his two year old R1300 probably only got £10,000 from the dealer against his new model.

This is a fully loaded top spec version which would have probably cost £25,000 when new.

Even dealers are offering similar bikes with far less miles at around £15,000.

That's a hell of a depreciation on a flagship model.

I was on a fishing exercise recently at my dealer just out of curiosity. My 1250RS Sport Standard, full luggage lost 50% after 3 years/15000miles trade in, so privately I would get maybe few £££ more. Dealer said the bike will go into trade. It's not a ESA bike or loaded with extras. However I am keeping the bike, so I haven't lost anything. There is nothing in the 1300 range that attracts me. Apart from the RT with the ASA.

The RS has always had trouble in the second hand market as they were never big sellers to start with.. They are a niche bike. A very good bike though. Really under rated in my opinion. It almost has the comfort of an RT but far lighter and nimbler. It can also be ridden like a sportsbike. But a REAL world sports bike because no one can ride at 150mph anymore.

Seems you understand that all too well.

Try a 2010 R1200GS with 114k miles. Worth feck all. We Buy Any Bike wouldn't even make an offer.
It still runs great (Wilbers suspension) so i'll just keep riding it. Will probably have to budget for a new clutch though at some point in the next year.
In exactly the same position - 114K miles 🍻
I do keep my bikes for a long time though so by the time it gets to 200K miles it won’t owe me anything.
The way I look at it is that I wouldn’t do anything more on a newer bike than I do on this one.
To upgrade to a 1250 would cost £thousands more than replacing consumable parts.

114k..chapeau. I'd say you're both well past break even/doesn't owe you a penny. Certainly if you look at the PCP guys and lets say £200 a month for 3 yrs to do 15k miles...rinse and repeat. (50p a mile just on the bikes cost/depreciation...you chaps will likely be at 12p a mile, even if you drop the bike in a skip tomorrow)

It’s what I call the ‘GS merry go round’
The latest model is always met with some scepticism, to say the least, while a previous model is paraded as the best BMW ever made.
The 1100 was criticised by everyone, bar 1 (RIP). The WC was the same and lots of people reserved judgement on the 1250s.

If I was a person who bought bikes on a regular basis and had a 1250, I’d sell it now for top money and buy a knockdown 1300. In a few years time the tide will turn and I’d sell the 1300 for the same money I’d payed and buy a cheaper, low mileage 1250 - free biking 🧐😁

Seems odd they would list it as a 2023. Even though they arrived in showrooms in the UK around OCT 23 I thought they were all registered as 2024 model year. The price is a bit suspect, especially as it's been bounced from dealer to reseller. scary

if registered in 2023 he can't state its 2024

finish isn't up to much these days - turned down a loaded one with 3k miles on it coz he'd taken it out in winter and it was all corroded - bike superficially looked mint and brand new - but get down and look properly - the exhaust looked worse than my 17 year old GS

and as per the other post mentioning a couple of faults in 11 months - plus the other guy saying his has basically had everything changed under warranty on his - should give a big clue why the mkt value is so low

they moved to a 3 years lease it and scrap it philosophy 13 years ago

Looking on BMW Motorrad's website there's a number of RS SEs on there, the Motorrad colours seem to be holding their value reasonably well. Ocean have a Nov 23 one with just over 2k miles for £13,950. Considering I paid under 16k for mine new over 2 years ago and allowing for the dealer mark up that still seems far less than the 1300 GSs are loosing, not that I'm interested in selling mine. My insurance is due next month and cheapest I've been quoted so far is £134.44
Cotswold had IIRC 3 for sale around new year in the Motorrad colours, there's none left now.

He won't have got anything for it if it was on a pcp, just handed it back.2 years is a short pcp deal ?

I was offered a fully loaded low mileage 25 plate Harley Pan America last week for £13,500 from an HD dealer. This included full service and 2 year warranty.

Checked the new price and it's a little over £25k

I'll never get rid of mine, its only done just over 40,000.
Doesn't owe me a penny.

I paid 8k for a 2016 fully loaded factory low GS with 29K on the clock

3 years later with 41K on the clock, the dealer wouldnt touch it , and i got 4K for it (indy trader)

it sold back into the public for 7K i believe

Registered date. And obviously made in 2023. So it's a 2023.

Not necessarily scary at all. Most dealers won't take up showroom space with something they deem as high miles. For me , the concept that 20,000 miles is high on a big boxer is nuts. You'd still be able to buy an insured warranty for it.

Well, the PX price I refer to is just theoretical. Its a number a dealer would assign to it and take it off the new bike. If a trader is selling it for £11,500, I would imagine he's aiming at a 15% margin. So probably paid £10,000 for the bike.
