Second hand prices of R1300 - Strangely low

Well, the PX price I refer to is just theoretical. Its a number a dealer would assign to it and take it off the new bike. If a trader is selling it for £11,500, I would imagine he's aiming at a 15% margin. So probably paid £10,000 for the bike.
It's a low price agreed for a 1300 ,I got £10,500 for my 2019 GS 1250 Rallye with just short of 21,000miles in March 2024 when I p/x for a 1300.I paid £22,500 for a top spec 1300, fuck knows what its worth now, just getting quotes for my insurance renewal I valued it at £15,950 ,optimistic ????

A few months back BMW Bristol offered me £12.7k for my 71 plate 1250 GSA (had about 12500 miles I think) against a trade in on a new 1300 GSA. £1k from me ended up making the 1300GSA about £189 pm if I remember correctly.

Decided to stick with my 1250 :D

You try having an original 1200RS of 2016 vintage, apparently its only worth £3500 as a trade in now.
There's a nice low mileage one for sale at nearly £7K. Optimistic in this climate.

I'm sitting on an original 2015 RS12. Mine from day 1. 56k miles. Worth peanuts I imagine.

I just cannot justify a 4 figure spend on newer 2 wheels.

Roll on a summer holiday (with wife) and hopefully a Euro bike trip (sans wife).

My wife gives me "The Look" whenever I suggest I'll just go get a new bike. She reckons guys over 70 shouldn't be riding bikes :)
I do like the thought of an Auto RS13 though. The current build modes don't seem to suit my needs either.

I've often said how well I've got this bike tailored to give me all day comfort, and "adequate" performance.

So my immediate plan following a non-start incident in October before the usual hibernation - I've decided to treat it to a new starter motor and solenoid (maybe a start button too) and carry on riding till the bike or I just grind to a halt one day.

Really under rated in my opinion. It almost has the comfort of an RT but far lighter and nimbler. It can also be ridden like a sportsbike.
Seems you understand that all too well.
My GS was in for service. Had one RS for the day. When the 1250Sport came out I had it. After few modifications the ergonomics are almost like an RT/GS. For a medium/small size chap/Lady is ideal bike. Bike is popular abroad.

I’d recommend fitting a rather expensive but very impressive Motobatt hybrid battery to enhance starting.

I wrote an extensive thread in the 1250 section about it entitled “ big pile of dogshit”

Those that have subsequently fitted hybrid batteries report great results with no complaints.

Why deny yourself something you would like? Money, it's just a tool, if you can afford something go and get it and enjoy it. It's what life should be about and nothing better for your mental health.

My ex wife's godfather, a lovely man, denied himself anything apart from the basic necessities. He constantly worried about money and would do almost anything to avoid dipping into his savings.
He worked in fairly low paid jobs for all of his life even working part time until shortly before his death. When he died in 1977 he had savings of £33,000 and another £12,000 in cash where found in various hiding places around the house.
Bearing in mind you could buy a decent house for £8,000 in 1977 this was a substantial amount of money.
He often talked about things he would like to do and places he would like to go. No one had any idea he had access to that type of money and after his death I really felt for him.

As I've said, I believe money is just a tool and there to be used. Yes, I understand that most folks need some savings for a rainy day, but I just don't see the point in amassing 100's of thousand of pounds unless you have a clear goal for it.

Spend your money folks, it's what it's for.

all bikes are now made like junk - check Honda recall rate, and what the failures are...
oddly after exceptionally high values in here a few years back, BMW obviously did the usual trick of negotiating and you can drop to a lower form of "recall" that doesn't need to go public - service action - or stop sale (various names used by manufacturers to mask recalls)

Interesting, was reading a survey recently produced in the US. Owners were asked for quality and reliability after 4 years of ownership.
1.Honda
2.Yamaha
3.Kawasaki
4. Suzuki
5.Triumph

what a load of bollocks
Where I also wouldn't go as far as saying all bikes are junk these days. There has definitely been a shift in manufacturing strategy from longevity engineering to planned obsolescence.

My 90s Honda's look new on the inside and outside at 100,000 miles and 30 years of hard ownership.

I work on bikes all day everyday and I have no confidence that a bike manufacturered today will in that condition in 30 years times with high miles.

We have the technology today to literally put a planned life on a component.

Why are the 1300 prices strangely low ? There seems to be a myth in here that BMWs bikes and GSs in particular keep their value better than any other brand, which is just not true judging by some of the figures banded about on here .
Take the guy last year who wanted to trade in his 8 month old 1300GS for the new GSA and he was offered £8k less than he paid for it . Thats £1000 per month deprecation which would buy another nice bike outright ….

You've never mentioned that before 🙄. Anyone who sells what was a brand new bike after eight months can expect a massive hit and obviously bought the wrong bike in the first place

Yeah agreed... why would you do that.... more money than sense I guess.

20% VAT on a new bike. You lose that value as depreciation immediately you ride the thing.
With many BMW bikes now north of £20k list price that £4k+ straight to HM Government.
I would resent paying that much as VAT from income which has already been taxed. I dont see me ever buying another new bike unless its something cheapish like a Himalayan.

VAT and the punitive car Vehicle Excise Duty on first purchase (for cars above £40K) and VED surcharge rates for the following five years mean I'll probably remain a used car owner.

The bike market is heavily seasonal. If you really need to sell in the winter you are going to take a hit. I would expect prices will pick up again in the spring.

Also I believe the market conditions are hard for manufacturers (I may be wrong) and they have started discounting a bit. Again this is going to hit the 2nd owner (nearly new) market the hardest.

Finally if you want to get a junk bike. By a cheap no name 50cc moped and run it through the winter. They literally dissolve in a single winter. I think I took a 50% deprecation on that one, so about £800....

Wasn’t the milage quite high on his px?
Stammering biker.

No you don't...

I don't like VAT obviously but after purchase the VAT cost is effectively absorbed by the value of the vehicle....

If you bought a new bike today and sold it tomorrow, pre-registered but with delivery mileage on it, it would not be worth £4000 less.
