What do you guys take with regards to bike locks on a long trip?

I currently have nothing asside from whats on the bike as standard, but then the bikes never really left for long outside, which obviously changes on a trip.

Weight is obviously an issue. Is one of those disc locks enough?

General concensus?

Big chain and padlock for me, and use it to chain a solid bit of your bike to something else solid, even another bike is better than nothing (as long as you know them of course:blast) disc locks do nothing if the scum have a van and a few friends.

I have been accused of going for overkill with security when taking my bikes on trips :augie

........but then i've been to places like Albania, Bulgaria and beyond, and you do sort of live on your nerves a bit....especially with that third party insurance policy you buy at the border!!!

Anyway..

..I take an Abus City padlock and chain....this is a good compromise against security and weight, and also is flexiable to curl up in the panniers. 9Although I might take an Oxford Hardcore instead as this has got good security test results, and is cheap at £50)

....a security wire (plastic coated security wire with two loops each end that can be attached to disc locks or chains) which weighs next to nothing, but can be used with locks to loop around solid objects...I think there are a few manufacturers who do these including Kryptonite and Oxford.

...then I take three disc locks!...yes three!!.....I reckon that visualy alone it is a hell of a deterrent!

All this doesn't really weigh too much, and the disc locks are easily stowed anywhere...and it is always better to take it than be worried your bike will be stolen.

I then just apply as much to the bike at night as I feel gives me peace of mind depending on where I am.....

.....budget hotel of a French motorway...the lot!!
.....hotel in Switzerland......couple of ddisc locks and the chain (still over-kill here)
.....Albania...the lot!!...and in a guarded Parking area too!!

My advice is take a good padlock and disc locks.......they don't take up too much room, get easier to stow as the tour goes on, and you get use to the minimal extra weight anyway.

But also bear in mind that I'm sure your bike is actually more safe abroad than in most places in the UK....and it's really only peace of mind.

cheapish shackle lock and cable to secure helmets to the bike. i usually fix it to the wheel, so i guess it might stop a particularly lazy tea leaf nicking the bike.

i'm a bit careful about where i leave the bike, but that's it.

i tend to stay in motels abroad and the bike is usually parked outside the window with the OEM alarm on. the sight of me in me pants should scare off the toughest thief.

get a good solid chain and lock,doesnt have to be a famouse brand, (abus buy a lot from cheaper suppliers and have their name on it , for instance)
dont waste time with disclocks, u locks, worked for a firm that tested bike locks etc once, and these are the worst,
 
I carry a disk lock and a cable. If I'm just leaving it for a meal or something and it's going to be out of sight, I bung the disk lock on. Overnight, I use the same lock as a padlock and lock it to something solid (or a friend's bike).

I don't kid myself that it will make the bike impossible to steal, but I hope it will encourage any passing petty thieves to move on to another bike.
 
U lock and cable and chain & padlock if you are worried about weight then lay off the pies for a couple of days:D
 
Datatagged, microdotted, Trovan transpondered. Oxford Hardcore lock & Chain, Oxford Omega Disk lock. Factory alarm / immobiliser.

If they nick it, they really really want it.

Be sure to tell AcuTrac when it goes on a (some might say, inevitable) low loader, or they will think your bike is being stolen.
 
Locking up

In France no insurance company will entertain any claim for theft unless your bike is left locked with an approved (by them) U-lock or chain. The fitting for a U-lock under the seat on the GS is very neat - but first be sure that you can get the seat on and off without a real pantomime!;
 
Disc locks, work of the devil, cause more damage than they save, only designed to p1ss off the owner, not the person nicking your bike.

If someone wants your bike, almost no security is going to stop them, so it's all about keeping you happy :comfort

Personally, I'd use a chain or shackle type lock to stop a passer by / hotel owner from being easily able to move the bike.
