Seeking advice on water problems on my R80GS

Hello All,

I have an 1987 R80GS. It is a lovely bike, fitted with a 40 litre petrol tank.

I bought it last year in Germany and rode it back to Ireland. On the way back, I encountered very heavy rain, and this caused the bike to steadily splutter and stop. Initially I was worried, as I was on the motorway in Belgium, but after waiting 20 minutes the bike started again and ran for long enough to get off the motorway. It cut out a few more times when I rode it in the rain, but once it stopped raining, it was perfect all the way back to Ireland.

I am sorry to admit that I have not done anything about it yet, but now I have to figure out what caused it, how to rectify it (if possible), and how I can deal with it on the side of the road if it does happen again.

I guess the first job is to remove the large petrol tank and examine the HT cables underneath the tank, I also intend to examine rubber boots etc around the HT area. If all cables look OK, should I replace them anyway?

If I do not see obvious signs of wear, what should I do next?

Do you think it must be electrical? When I ride it in the dry, it is faultless. The problem has not happened since, but I have not ridden it in the wet since, so the fault must be there still. Because I feel it will probably stop again, I am reluctant to use it until I sort it out.

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Mark Breen

Whilst not disputing the above, also have a look at the top of the carbs. The little round plug thingy can leak and let water into the top of the vacum chamber. :rob

I had exactly the same problem and swapped the coil for a secondhand one. It's much improved but I'm not sure it's 100%. I think I'll put new HT leads on next and maybe a dyna coil sometime in the future.

Let's be having some pictures then. :thumb2

Hello Brassmonkey and others here,

First, let me me say thank you very much for the prompt replies, ad sorry if I asked a question that has been asked umpteen times before.

I will immediately price and try to order new HT leads, and a new coil. But I am off to try to google a Dyna Coil. I have not heard that term before, but it is something that I want? My last bike was a K1200LT, and one reason I got rid of it was I was worried about so many complex items to break down.

So, I will not ask any more questions here until I do my homework, but if anyone wants to push me towards a super new ignition, feel free.

Thanks again,

Mark

dyna coils have been around years, you get a better spark, and much more reliable, used a lot for tuning, (the only coil that would run on my gas(nitrous) bike, without fail)

The Boyer Micro Power ignition includes coils and after discounting the cost of the coils is a cheap replacement for bits that will wear out/ fail one day.

Check also the HT heads

I had my bike stalled on both - cracked coil and damp original plug heads. Replaced both, the HT wires for NGK, the coil for Dyna.
Imagine, the only BMW with a bunch of oldish Guzzis, and when it started raining I get stuck. it was tough...
