Hello All,
I have an 1987 R80GS. It is a lovely bike, fitted with a 40 litre petrol tank.
I bought it last year in Germany and rode it back to Ireland. On the way back, I encountered very heavy rain, and this caused the bike to steadily splutter and stop. Initially I was worried, as I was on the motorway in Belgium, but after waiting 20 minutes the bike started again and ran for long enough to get off the motorway. It cut out a few more times when I rode it in the rain, but once it stopped raining, it was perfect all the way back to Ireland.
I am sorry to admit that I have not done anything about it yet, but now I have to figure out what caused it, how to rectify it (if possible), and how I can deal with it on the side of the road if it does happen again.
I guess the first job is to remove the large petrol tank and examine the HT cables underneath the tank, I also intend to examine rubber boots etc around the HT area. If all cables look OK, should I replace them anyway?
If I do not see obvious signs of wear, what should I do next?
Do you think it must be electrical? When I ride it in the dry, it is faultless. The problem has not happened since, but I have not ridden it in the wet since, so the fault must be there still. Because I feel it will probably stop again, I am reluctant to use it until I sort it out.
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Mark Breen
