I have a 1990 R80 GS para. Just thought I'd post my thoughts on what I think so far, and all that !

Bits I like
It feels so 'planted' on the road - gives a very reassuring ride (low centre of gravity helps)
A very flexible engine - good on the open road and in traffic
Simple to maintain
100% reliable - it just keeps going

Bits I might change
All that front fairing, upper crash bar, square headlight, revcounter are just extra weight it doesn't need. Someday its all coming off. Pretty ugly front end anyway.
Gearing seems a little too revvy for my liking. May help to fit a R100GS diff sometime ?
Exhaust seems very complex for a simple engine, but too expensive to consider tampering with it
mpg averages 43mpg - surely I can improve on that ?

Anyway, there's my thoughts. Its a bike that takes some getting used to, but definitely grows on you. By the way, I find the front brake just fine, just seems to have less servo than other bikes Ive had.

my twopennorth.

Firstly.
Don't junk the front.
See if someone wants to part ex an unfaired complete bike for yours with the roo bars etc. you may get a very good deal..
Secondly.
43 mpg is good, I sometimes wish I could achieve that high a figure, my 80g/s two up averages 36 mpg..
Thirdly.
Exhaust is just perfect imho, out of the crap and water in deep puddles.
less chance of water ingestion when it lies down for a rest when crossing said puddles :augie
Fourthly.
Are you sure it's GS ?? cos front brake is unheard of unless twinned or modified :D:D

Lastly
REVVY :nenau:nenau
Red line @7250 and out of puff around 6000..... that's tickover on some jap machines :mmmm:rob

Some days they are good - Some days they are not so good

As Proff said - "have you used the front brake yet" or slipped around on the dual seat

"All that front fairing, upper crash bar, square headlight, revcounter are just extra weight it doesn't need. Someday its all coming off. Pretty ugly front end anyway"

What is the Bike - Is it an 80GS.....or an 80GS with a R100GS PD kit fitted - the 80GS has a round headlight.....or an ex German R80GS PD?.....look the frame number up

Definitely a square headlight. It was square yesterday, and I fully expect it to be square tomorrow. Its a bog standard late R80GS. It was yesterday, and I fully expect it to be tomorrow.

But sometime it will all change !

Post a pic of the bike, Mike :D

Go for it MIke....last time I heavily modded a g/s..it ended up as a trike !!!

43 mpg is about the max I'm afraid ( unless you ride like a wuss:D)..so doubt you'll improve on that:(

Awful lot of work and expenses swopping the front end around....but as Proff says, see if anyone wants to swop ( not that easy to do ).

Brakes....stop it !!!:rob

Thats why I suggested doing a WHOLE bike deal, some on here would love a PD styled bike in place of their cooking [ and IMHO better looking] 80GS...

The work involved to just swap bodywork is a bastard of a timewaster that never goes smoothly..
DAMHIK :blast:augie

Proff - what does that mean?

I've got a standard R80GS front end in red! - if you want to swop

Perhaps one day it'll turn into a rectangular headlight. Same as all the other Roobar fitted fairings.

I'm definitely interested. The front end on mine is a bit tatty, but its all there - and its red.

How would we make this happen ?

It is a 100GS that I have that I will probably break as i need a few bits for other bikes - nothing wrong with the Bike, but it needs an MOT and all that stuff, so it will be easier to get rid of it as parts
