seized alternator

Horrendous noise when I tried to start the bike earlier. On inspection behind the alternator belt cover, the alternator isn't turning causing the squeal from belt. Does this mean a new alternator or are they repairable?

Edit I see Delboy had the same problem

My bike has come back today from the dealer having had the same problem. Mine was replaced under the warranty, seized solid it was snapped the belt. Apparently its more common when the bike has been sitting around for long periods of time and not used. My bike had only done 400 miles in 15 months. Most of which was before i got it.

I've cut the belt off (a new belt is due anyway) and found a chunk of corroded alternator housing floating around under the alternator. Quality product eh? Will give the battery a full charge which should get me to my local independent (Brian Giles). Before I found the chunk of housing he thought he would be able to get the alternator recondition with a local auto electrician but it looks like I will need one from a breaker now. Motorworks have a selection for a shade over £200 inc VAT :-(

What happens is the outer winding expands and breaks the case,we recon alternators and starters for cars and trucks and this is quite a common fault. It would depend on the price of the parts and the condition of the other alternator components which we compare against a replacement unit to decide the course of action.

That would explain it, and the odd noise it was making before it failed :(

There should be a sticker on the case with a make and part no,if there is a auto electrician near to you it maybe worth speaking to them for a price.

Change the bearings and see how it goes.

Failing bearings can make some nasty noises before they finally seize. So the structure might be ok. Change the bearings for new sealed units and see how it goes. They are most likely low cost standard items.

Its seriously corroded and blown its probably no good. However, I've had alternators continue to work even though the part of the stator has delaminated. If this one gave no electrical faults before it seized its probably ok.

Not uncommon on garage queens. I changed one for a mate who had been to a dealer as it wouldnt start, who told him the engine was seized :eek:

Miff, you're as bad as me. I keep picking up spares 'just in case' for my K75 as they are so cheap these days. Trouble is I rarely need them so I will soon have a complete second bike in kit form.

Yes me to my alternator fine to but you never know :)

The problem is caused by corrosion between the Ali casing and the steel stator which blows the casing open, usually happens at the bottom part where water sits and is very common on these Denso made alternators-Toyota MR2s were always favourite. Problem is sometimes people drive with it making a noise which usually causes the stator to overheat and the windings to short out. Either way often scrap anyway.
