I am just about to bite the bullet on a new 1250.
I have always serviced my own bikes, but the salesman tells me that to keep the Bmw service it’s got to be done to BMW spec, fair enough.
He then added that part of the said spec is a diagnostic check which only BMW have the kit for .
I very loath to shell out over a grand for a service deal, when it’s something I can do myself has anyone come across this?

Well I don't know if that's the 'BMW truth' or not, but it does not surprise me one little bit.

We do know that 'Software Updates' on R1250 bikes can take 3 hours or more, because each sensor has to be calibrated or some such bollocks..... whereas on the Goldilocks R1200 bikes it takes 15 minutes (if you even need it at all).

Seems to me it's a Board Level Strategy Change on how they can tie new customers in to their service plans.

Good Luck, you may need it.

I have to add.... if this is true.... that in itself has just put me right off the R1250 :blast:barf

It's like having a life long BMW Child Support Payment over the bloody bike..... where they control the amount you pay :D

Haha, no thanks

to me, whether we like it or not, I think the days of "self servicing" is dead The latest GS is hugely software driven - if there is updates to it - and there are a lot that they dont tell you about - then I want them applied when they are due.

I also think that if you need a warranty claim on your new £18k bike then I don't want to have to argue the toss that I have serviced it "to BMW spec" just to get a warranty claim. for saving a few hundred quid, its not worth it to me. Each to their own though.

You always have the option of doing the majority of the elements of the service yourself (to the required spec and using approved parts) and having the dealer do the software updates and diagnostic check. That should reduce the cost significantly.

I'll have it serviced by BMW during Warranty, but after 3 years I will do mundane services myself, but hopefully find a friendly "Independent" who can do the things I don't want to do (or don;t have the time to do)...

That's what I have done with all my bikes and cars

The same question just came up on the RT facebook page. Might be worth reading this

I don't entirely agree with that article. A heavily legally resourced manufacturer still won't want a battle in the courts, over a stupid warranty claim. They have UK Consumer Law against them.

There is an organisation called The Motorcycle Industry Association and they have a Buy with Confidence Scheme. BMW are a member.

When you buy a brand new motorcycle, and have issues with the Manufacturer or Dealers, they can act as a legal arbitrator to settle any disputes on your behalf.

So it may be worth while contacting these guys to help you.

Were we not told this when Can-bus systems first hit the scene? Then the GS-911 came along and we had the advantage back. I was told when I bought my Triumph Explorer that only a Triumph dealer could do the servicing as it had to be connected to their system get the fault codes.... then along cake Dealer tool.
Give it a year or two and someone will have made an interface so you can home service. I certainly will if I can once the warranty period is up...

I was surprised when I found out the EU Block exemption rules only apply to cars and not motorcycles. I agree with the article as I assume the lawyers know what they are talking about. But as you say, whether a manufacturer would actually try and challenge is doubtful. I'm having mine serviced by a dealer for the first 3 years, so not bothered either way

No... Lawyers will spin a story using their knowledge that leads you to think theirs is the only option.

The MIA will arbitrate for you so costs will be a lot less, and you may get a faster solution.

As I said, this doesn't impact me as I have no intention of doing my own servicing until the warranty has expired :)

I’ve the hardware and software to do the BMW diagnostics (as per their servicing regime) and the software to manage the service reminders...... just saying

Over here in Germany for the extended warranty to be valid all services must be done by BMW, no way around it until extended runs out, after that either sell the bike or do my own, I will be doing my own, I have a goldilocks............:hippy
