Self servicing

Well I don't know if that's the 'BMW truth' or not, but it does not surprise me one little bit.

We do know that 'Software Updates' on R1250 bikes can take 3 hours or more, because each sensor has to be calibrated or some such bollocks..... whereas on the Goldilocks R1200 bikes it takes 15 minutes (if you even need it at all).

Seems to me it's a Board Level Strategy Change on how they can tie new customers in to their service plans.

Good Luck, you may need it.

That is not true, well sort of. It has nothing to do with 1200/1250, it's to do with the TFT taking a long time.

to me, whether we like it or not, I think the days of "self servicing" is dead The latest GS is hugely software driven - if there is updates to it - and there are a lot that they dont tell you about - then I want them applied when they are due.

I also think that if you need a warranty claim on your new £18k bike then I don't want to have to argue the toss that I have serviced it "to BMW spec" just to get a warranty claim. for saving a few hundred quid, its not worth it to me. Each to their own though.

As is the previous version with the "analogue" screen, the TFT hasn't really changed all that much in regards to the bike being software driven

Servicing these bikes is well within the capability of most experienced technical / hands on types - excl the one who laughingly refers to himself as 'engineer' :) My advice would be to take the service pack just for year 1&2, this will get you to the end of year 3 - warranty expires. All 'new model' software glitches will have been addressed. Mechanical servicing is very straightforward, any safety critical mechanical or electrical issues will be recall / FOC. this has been my approach to bike / car buying - works for me

The TFT won't be taking a long time, it's not 1987 with cassette uploads..... something else is happening. If they have to update the firmware and recalibrate the fully auto ESA sensors and Shiftcam Actuators etc, that in itself is R1250 specific.

It's most likely sensor calibration taking the time.

One of us knows what they're talking about and it isn't you :) It is the TFT....

Trouble is that only the dealer can do software updates.

Yup totally agree. Just one word, if I may on that subject, I do know lads who have had the software upgrade and the bike has ended up running bad!

I’ll still use my dealer on occasion but if the bike is running right I’ll do all my own servicing (using original parts of course), diagnostic and service reminder management saving myself many hundreds of pounds.

Is that when your new warranty runs out Mark, or are you going to start doing your own maintenance on the new bike already...

Tbh I’m already doing the servicing. I’ve a very good relationship with my dealer, buying the OEM parts for the servicing from them. Being aware of my professional resources they remain very supportive on warranty issues knowing that the bike has been properly serviced. I’d still use them for any significant software upgrades/recalls tho

Exactly same here, and they did Warranty replacement on Spot Light, rubber grommets, Final drive, Shaft and gaitor replacement. Recalled on Forks.

They've never done a single service on my bike. Except update software, fit Hill Start Assist, fit Warranty parts, and supply OEM service items.

They've seen the bike regularly and have stated THEY WOULD have it back in Part Exchange, when I'm ready.

So all good.

I am just about to bite the bullet on a new 1250.
I have always serviced my own bikes, but the salesman tells me that to keep the Bmw service it’s got to be done to BMW spec, fair enough.
He then added that part of the said spec is a diagnostic check which only BMW have the kit for .
I very loath to shell out over a grand for a service deal, when it’s something I can do myself has anyone come across this?

Look up MRDA.

That would be pretty hard to do with the software they use but nothing would surprise me about a dealer. If it ran bad, it would most likely just be a calibration
