Self Unwinding Pyramid Hugger

Riding back to Southampton from Bournemouth the other night at a steady 70 - 80 mph I started to hear a clacking from the rear (and stupidly ignored it). Assumed it was my dear wife's visor chattering again as usual.

Turned out one of the two bolts holding the Pyramid Hugger can completely unwound leaving the hugger flapping a bit - ouch ! The other was on its way.

Didn't do any damage but if you've got one - check it ! The design isn't that brilliant and despite being well tightened they still come loose.

Same thing happened to mine despite using theadlock, it now lives in the back of the garage and the bike seems cleaner as well. So if anyone wants one cheap PM me.

Where does it bolt on ? I have a wunderlich one which shares the brake caliper bolts. I sure hope they don't inwind

Gecko,bolts on the same place.
But the pyramid type have extension studs i think.

As Colt says it uses replacement extension studs on the brake caliper, it's one of the countersunk allen screws that go ito these extensions that came loose and actually came out on mine. Fortunately the extension studs holding the brake caliper were OK, these were torqued correctly and thread locked.

Take it easy with the Loctite, I used it on mine and one of those screws got stuck when I needed to remove the hugger (rear wheel puncture). Had to drill the bugger out, fortunately the bike was in my garage at the time.

I wish mine had come loose. I had to drill em out as well when I needed a new tyre recently. I've now replaced them with proper hexagonal bolts that can be tightened (and loosened) properly.

Happened on mine as well. BMW just re-tightened them on the first service and they've been fine since.

The aluminium countersunk washers just disintegrated over winter on mine so I just put large lock washers on had no problems since. Ain't pretty but it works.

pyramid hugger

I used locktite on my hugger - its still on there but....
maybe its the way I ride or all the pies that contribute to my 14st but I find that my hugger also hits the undertray - regardless of how much I jack up the preload.

Sure this isnt helping the fasteners any either.

Grease Em!

I've had one of these huggers for a couple of years & 20k miles. Never had any problems with the allen screws coming loose always put a smear of grease (silicone) on the threads then tighten them hand tight with a normal allen key - torqued to who guesswork ft/lb. Allows you to get the thread tighter therefore better grip & doesn't vibrate loose, but also unscrews easier too - bit of an oxymoron perhaps

Tip from good ol' dad years ago & I rarely see a nut or screw coming loose (tho' some would say I've certainly got a few loose screws myself )
